Bamble combines coastal scenery and hiking trails with striking traces of history. From Trolldalen Kystfort, the view stretches across the archipelago; elsewhere, paths lead to historic church ruins or through nature reserves. When choosing where to stay, consider whether you mainly want to spend time outdoors or focus on culture and history.

Churches, forts and local history

The restored ruins of Olavskirken, a medieval church dating from around 1150, lie beside Bamble Church. Bamble Church itself is a neo-Gothic wooden church, consecrated in 1845; its tower dates from 1902. Inside are two large altarpieces by the parish priest Gustav A. Lammers. The ruins and the church therefore represent different chapters of local history.

Trolldalen Kystfort offers a different historical perspective. It was built by the Germans in 1941 during the Second World War. Bunkers, passageways and gun emplacements are still visible at close range; the fort can be reached via Valleveien and from the sea. The grounds offer panoramic views of the archipelago. After the Germans withdrew in 1943, the Norwegian military did not take over the site, which is why it is considered quite unique.

Traces of the Second World War can also be seen in the landscape at Tangen Fort: tunnels, bunkers and cannon foundations. The area was opened to the public in 1998. Eik Gård is part of the Bamble Museum; in Langesund, a fisheries museum is housed in Cudrio Sjøbod. These places add other local themes to the story of the area’s church and military history.

Hiking and cycling along the coast

For longer hikes, the Kyststien is an important route to know about: it is 60 kilometres long in total and runs between Stathelle and the border near Fossing in Kragerø. The Oldtidsveien hiking trail has a different focus. It was created and marked by the Bamble Historical Association; information boards along the trail cover prehistoric times and more recent history. It starts at the ruins of St. Olav’s Church beside the present-day Bamble Church. The prehistoric road is considered the equivalent of today’s E18 at the time.

If you prefer cycling, you can follow the Skjærgårdsruta. The route is 58 kilometres long and runs from Langesund to Kragerø. Its section from Langesund to Valle is 21 kilometres long. These distances can help you choose between a longer trip and the specified section; on their own, they do not indicate journey time or the route’s profile.

Other nature destinations offer different experiences: Tangen Fort lies in a nature reserve and is a popular hiking area with fossils and calcareous bedrock. Røsskleiva Nature Reserve has an extensive network of hiking trails. Most of Langøya is designated as a landscape protection area, and the island is home to several rare plant species. The coastal circular trail there includes a recommended detour to Langøytangen Lighthouse at the southern tip of the island.

Coastal towns and recreation

Krogshavn in Langesund is a family-friendly recreation area with several places to take a break by the water: there are benches, piers and bathing steps, as well as lawns, long stretches of bare rock and several sandy beaches. There is also a large car park, a parkour park and public barbecue facilities; the area is open to everyone. Rognstranda offers a long, gently sloping sandy beach, along with small paved paths, lawns, car parks, bathing tubs and bathing steps. These specific features can help you decide which kind of coastal stay suits your holiday best.

Langesund is known for its “Langesundsreker” (Langesund prawns); along the coastal route, you will also pass a fish shop. Together with the fisheries museum in Cudrio Sjøbod, these offer a culinary and local connection for travellers who want to discover regional coastal themes as well as hiking trails and historic sites. Bamble is also part of the Gea Norvegica UNESCO Global Geopark.
