Måloy: Boat Tour, Views and History
Accommodation in Måloy
Måloy offers different perspectives on the town and its surroundings: a guided trip through the southern fjords, viewpoints overlooking the town and harbour, and stories of trade, fishing and the Måløy Raid. Whether you’d prefer to shape your trip around the water, a climb or historical insights, each experience has a different focus.
Boat trip through the southern fjords
Discover Fjord Magic is a two-hour guided boat tour. It departs from the cruise pier in Måløy, passes beneath the Måløy Bridge and travels through Vågsfjorden, Fåfjorden and Skatestraumen. Its clearly defined route makes the tour a specific way to explore the fjords from the water. If this part of the trip is especially important to you, you can make a point of including it when planning your stay. The boat trip offers a different way to experience Måloy than the view from a summit or one of the viewpoints.
Fitness trails and views over Måloy
There are two illuminated fitness trails around Måløy Stadium and Skramsvatnet. Skramsvatnet is also the starting point for the hike to Veten. From the summit, the view extends across large parts of Vågsøy and the Stadthavet. This gives you a choice between trails around the stadium and lake and a hike with views from the summit; no information about the hike’s length or walking time is provided.
The viewpoints at Gottebergshammeren and Ellingskarshornet also offer different perspectives. Gottebergshammeren is on the north side of Måløy and offers panoramic views over the town and harbour. Ellingskarshornet is in the south and affords views over the town, harbour and Nordfjord. Both viewpoints are considered easy to access. What sets them apart when choosing an outing is mainly the view: at Nordfjord, the vista extends beyond the town and harbour to the fjord.
Trade history and memories of the Måløy Raid
Vågsberget is a historic trading and inn site with roots in the 17th century. During the summer season, visitors who purchase a ticket are offered a guided tour. It’s a good way to learn about the historic site as part of a guided visit. The Maloy Raid Centre offers a different cultural focus: located in the heart of Måløy, it displays original photographs and several metres of original film about the Måløy Raid of 27 December 1941. There are also exhibitions about Martin Linge.
Another detail of the town’s history can be found in Måløy’s first mural. Stepan and Gaute painted it in September 2017; it is intended to depict the lucrative fishing industry in Måløy. In Måloy, a historic trading and inn site, exhibitions on wartime history and a mural connected to fishing offer different cultural themes side by side.
The Maloy Raid Centre welcomes visitors outside its advertised opening hours by prior arrangement. So if you’d like to include a visit in your trip, note that you can arrange an appointment outside these hours.
