Discover Vågsøy: Coast, Culture and Lighthouses
Accommodation in Vågsøy
Vågsøy’s coastal landscape and maritime history tell very different stories. Måløy is located on the island of Vågsøy and is surrounded by the Stadhavet, considered one of the most weather-exposed stretches of the Norwegian coast. There are also routes through the town, historic trading sites, lighthouses and nature along the shore. When planning your trip, you might ask yourself whether you mainly want to explore Måløy, learn more about coastal history or focus on walks.
Måløy Between a Town Walk and Coastal Views
An easy-to-follow walk through Måløy begins at the Coastal Route pier and follows the numbered streets from Gate 1 to Gate 8. Short detours along gravel paths lead to viewpoints. The murals are also part of the townscape: there are more than 20 of them in Måløy, representing the coastal culture of Vågsøy.
If you want to experience the coast from more than just the land, you could consider a coastal culture kayaking experience in Måløy. It brings you close to the wild coastline, with stories told along the way about life at sea, old traditions and the interplay between people and nature. This offers a different perspective on coastal culture than walking through the streets or viewing the murals.
A distinctive landmark on the shore is Kannesteinen in the village of Oppedal. The rock is about 3 m high and has been shaped over thousands of years by waves, ice and rock; the movement of the water has polished its surface. On a trip there, you will encounter a landform whose shape is explained by these natural forces.
Trading History and Places of Remembrance
Vågsberget offers insight into the history of coastal trade. The site dates back to the 17th century; the residence and the general store are open to the public for guided tours. Today, Vågsberget is one of the best-preserved 19th-century trading sites in Western Norway. Its different historical periods make a visit interesting if you are curious about the development of coastal trade.
Måløyraidsenteret offers a different historical perspective. It displays original photographs and several metres of original film about the Måløy Raid of 27 December 1941. Here, the focus is on explaining a specific event, while Vågsberget tells the story of trade history. If you are travelling with varied interests, you can include these visits as different cultural highlights in your trip.
Lighthouses and Walks
The lighthouses also differ in their histories. Kråkenes fyr was established by the Norwegian Coastal Administration in 1906 as a leading and approach lighthouse at the Stadhavet. The unspoilt nature around the lighthouse invites you to explore the shore and the area around Kråkeneset on foot. Kråkenes fyr is also operated as accommodation, with overnight stays available for rent. If, while looking for a holiday rental on Vågsøy, you are also considering an overnight stay somewhere special, this is a specifically named accommodation option.
Skongenes fyr was first lit in 1870 and has since been an important navigation point for shipping along the coast. Flowers that grow only on the coast bloom along the hiking route there. Hendanes fyr has a more recent history: it was built in 1914 and automated as early as 1963. Access is via a footpath of about 1 km along a narrow road on the mountainside. Bear this specific route description in mind if you include Hendanes fyr in your day’s plans.
