Høyanger between fjord and industrial heritage
Accommodation in Høyanger
The Sognefjord divides Høyanger into two parts. At the same time, the town’s industrial history shapes the place: museums, a distinctive industrial culture and special architecture provide tangible points of reference. There are also hiking experiences on Bergefjell and Høyangerfjellet. You can plan your stay around whether you would like to discover local history, explore the landscape on foot, or enjoy both.
Industrial history and art in Høyanger
In the centre of Høyanger is Byporten, a building designated as a cultural heritage site, completed in 1934 and now home to the Høyanger Industrial Town Museum. Gunnar S. Galleriet is also located in Byporten. The two institutions offer different perspectives on the town: the museum represents its industrial history, while the gallery displays artworks from several decades.
Gunnar S. Galleriet brings together around 30 works dating from approximately 1950 to approximately 1980. They include drawings, watercolours, paintings and screen prints. The approximate number and broad range of forms give an insight into the collection, which is not limited to a single medium. If you are interested in art, you can combine this focus with Høyanger’s other cultural themes.
The Vasskraftmuseet offers another way to explore industrial history. It was established in 1986 in the former Kraftstasjon 1. An original unit comprising a turbine and generator is a central part of the exhibition. The Høyanger Hydropower Museum is located on the industrial site of Hydro Høyanger Metallverk. These places draw attention to hydropower and the town’s industrial character.
Architecture and church art
Høyanger Church combines a modern construction date with a clearly defined architectural form: it is a modern masonry church built in the basilica style. It was designed by Arnstein Arneberg and Olav S. Platou; Bishop Ragnvald Indrebø consecrated the church in 1960. Its stained-glass window depicts Jesus on the cross. The church has 374 seats. It is therefore a specific cultural attraction to include in your travel plans, especially if you are interested in architecture or church art.
Hiking and time on Høyangerfjellet
Kraftruta is designed as a two-day experience and includes a hike across Bergefjell as well as a town walk through Høyanger. The town section shows how the management of the aluminium plant built the town as an ideal community and how this gave rise to a distinctive industrial culture and architecture. Starting in Høyanger, the route is about 13.5 km long, has 700 metres of elevation gain, and is described as moderate and marked. These details can help you include Kraftruta in your plans as a multi-day hiking and cultural experience.
Synkenhytta is the Høyanger municipality’s day-trip cabin on Høyangerfjellet. There are two routes of different lengths to the cabin: the longer route starts at the car park at Siplo and covers 6.5 km; the shorter is about 4 km and follows the gravel road from “Flyplassen”. You can take the distances into account when choosing a route; the distances alone do not indicate walking time.
Synkenhytta is accessible, with a ramp leading into the cabin. Two Hasle canoes, along with paddles and life jackets, are available to borrow free of charge. The cabin therefore combines a day trip on Høyangerfjellet with the option of borrowing canoes and equipment. When planning your stay, you can consider these facilities as interests in their own right, in addition to the hike.
Choosing a place to stay and the ferry connection
Lavik, in Høyanger municipality, is served by the Oppedal–Lavik ferry connection. If this connection is important for your trip, Lavik may play a role in choosing where to stay. When looking for a holiday apartment in Høyanger, it is worth first considering whether your trip will focus more on the cultural attractions in the centre, Kraftruta or an excursion to Synkenhytta. These places and experiences offer different points of interest, without needing to be combined into a single route.
