Rugsund is an old trading town on the island of Rugsundøya in Bremanger. Protected wooden buildings and the harbour shape the town, while marked hiking trails lead to other parts of the island. Its trading history, trails and waterfront activities offer different ways to make the most of your stay. When choosing accommodation, you can consider whether you mainly want to explore the historic character of the town or also plan for hiking and water activities.

Trading history and church art

Rugsund's trading history dates back to the early 17th century, when townspeople from Bergen settled here. In 1924, the National Heritage Authority placed the trading town under protection. Protected wooden buildings are part of the townscape and give its history a visible architectural presence.

The church also brings together several eras: Rugsund has had a church since the 14th century; today's Rugsund Church was built on the mainland in 1837. Its interior is decorated with rose painting and wood carvings associated with restoration work by the artist Kinsarvik. The church can be viewed from the outside. If you want to see the interior, check opening times or service times in advance.

Trails and waterfront activities

Several marked hiking trails lead from Rugsund to other parts of Rugsundøya. Trail conditions may vary depending on the season. The diving centre in Rugsund can fill scuba tanks with air; boats are also available for hire. Check the providers' availability before your trip, especially if one of these activities is important to your plans.

The harbour has guest moorings and service buildings. As harbour services may change, it is worth checking what is currently available before your trip. In summer, the trading town has its own café—a seasonal offering that can add to your stay at that time of year.

Excursions in the wider destination of Bremanger

Rugsund is considered a good starting point for excursions to Mount Hornelen, the Tongane coastal fort and the Vingen rock carving site. These destinations are in the wider destination of Bremanger and offer experiences of their own. Tongane includes bunkers, buildings and a cannon from the Second World War, with views of the coastal landscape. The outdoor area is freely accessible and can be explored independently via paths with information boards.

Vingen offers a different focus: it has more than 2,300 rock carvings dating back around 7,000 years. Access, including landing by boat and mooring at the quay, is only permitted as part of organised guided tours. If you plan to visit Vingen, take this access requirement into account when planning your trip.

Accommodation and planning your stay

Rugsund offers places to stay. The old bakery in the trading town is now used as accommodation; a small inn is also part of the local tourism scene. Check current availability for your travel dates. This will help you choose a holiday apartment or other accommodation that suits the interests bringing you to Rugsund: historic buildings and church art, trails on Rugsundøya or activities at the harbour. Rugsund is accessible by car via the mainland connection, which opened in 2002.
