Bremanger: Rock Art, Coast and Mountains

Bremanger combines striking coastal villages with traces of the distant past and hiking destinations in the mountain landscape. Here, you can choose from cultural sites, nature trails and experiences on the water. When planning a holiday rental, a good first question is therefore which places and activities are of particular interest to you during your stay.

Experience Rock Art and History

Vingen is one of the major rock carving sites in the Nordic region, with more than 2,300 carvings dating back about 7,000 years. A visit requires special planning, as access is permitted only as part of organised guided tours. This also applies to landing by boat and mooring at the quay. This makes it easy to distinguish a cultural destination that can only be visited on a guided tour from places that can be explored freely.

At the Tongane coastal fort, bunkers, buildings and a cannon tell the story of the Second World War. The outdoor area is open to visitors and can be explored independently along paths with information boards; it also offers views of the coastal landscape. If you are interested in historic sites, Rugsund offers a different focus: the old trading town lies on Rugsundøya and has protected wooden buildings. The Directorate for Cultural Heritage placed Rugsund under protection in 1924.

Near Grotlesanden is the old cemetery at Grotle, with graves dating from the Middle Ages. The beach itself is a long, white sandy beach overlooking the Atlantic; toilet and shower facilities are also available there. These experiences come together at this location, without requiring you to follow a particular itinerary: you can be interested in the beach, the historic cemetery or both.

Hiking Trails, Mountains and Special Landscapes

There are various ways to get active in the mountain landscape. The Veten Plateau has several hiking trails, and Veten is also home to a day-use hiking cabin with a library for hikers. The hike to Veten starts at Grotlesanden. Another specifically described route leads from Svarstad on Bremangerlandet along a three-hour mountain trail to Vetvika. If you would rather try a climbing route, Hornelen has a Via Ferrata with routes of varying difficulty.

The landscape itself also offers remarkable destinations: Ålfotbreen is protected as a landscape conservation area because of its unique climate and rock formations. Together with Gjegnalundsbreen, it is one of Norway’s two westernmost glaciers. In Botnane, hikers can encounter poems by Jan-Magnus Bruheim in the landscape along Diktarstien. There is also an important rule for visitors to the coast: Veststeinen is protected, and landing there is prohibited during the breeding season.

Places, Getting There and Choosing a Base

Kalvåg offers several specific ways to enjoy a stay: restored boathouses and fishermen’s cabins preserve the history of the place. Guided boat trips depart from Kalvåg, where you can experience coastal nature and wildlife up close. Knutholmen has a restaurant and offers dining in a distinctive setting. Kalvåg can be reached by car via county roads from Florø, Måløy and the rest of Nordfjord; there is good parking in the village centre. Bus services run to Bremanger and nearby areas, but public transport to Kalvåg may be limited. When choosing a holiday rental, therefore, also consider which destinations you want to visit and how you will get there.
