Holmedal combines insights into Helle’s knife-making with hiking destinations and a rich local history. Helle’s old brick factory is located by the fjord; it houses production, warehousing, marketing and sales. Nykshytta by Nyksvatnet and Moldura add a day cabin and Holmedal’s highest peak. Holmedal Church and the standing stone at Bakke farm offer further cultural points of interest. This raises a practical question as you plan your trip: should crafts and local history shape your stay, or would you prefer to focus mainly on the hiking destinations?

Knife-making by the fjord

Helle’s factory shop can be visited Monday to Friday, from 09:00 to 15:00. For groups of 10 people, Helle offers a guided tour of the production facility by prior arrangement. The tour shows how a Helle knife is made from start to finish. If you are particularly interested in the manufacturing process, the tour offers a focus of its own; the factory shop is open on the stated days and at the stated times.

Nykshytta and Moldura

Nykshytta is located by Nyksvatnet and is an accessible day cabin for hikers. The route there is about 2 km long and takes approximately 45 minutes at a normal walking pace. At the cabin, you can eat a meal you have brought with you, warm up and browse books.

The turnoff for the Moldura trail is 100 metres from Nykshytta. Moldura is the highest peak in Holmedal. From the summit, the view stretches across the mountain landscape from Jostedalsbreen to the North Sea. The nature experiences are therefore different: Nykshytta is a day cabin with practical opportunities to rest, while Moldura is associated with its summit and expansive views. The approximate route length and walking time to the cabin, as well as the distance to the turnoff, give you different points of reference as you consider your options.

Church, organ and memorial sites

Holmedal Church is a wooden long church in the village of Holmedal in Askvoll Municipality. It was designed by Eilert Christian Brodtkorp Christie and consecrated by Bishop Peder Hersleb Graah Birkeland on 24 November 1868. Its organ dates from 1881, has 11 stops and was brought to Holmedal from Sandviken Church in Bergen in 1919. These details offer points of interest for anyone interested in church architecture and the history of organs.

On 29 August 1947, a memorial stone was unveiled by Holmedal Church for six men from the Holmedal parish who lost their lives during the Second World War, 1939–1945. Another historic site is Bakke farm: a standing stone stands by the sea there, next to two burial mounds. The church and organ, the memorial stone, and the standing stone and burial mounds offer different topics in cultural history to consider when choosing your travel interests.
