Bulandet: Islands, bridges and coastal nature
Accommodation in Bulandet
Islands, bridges and open coastline
Bulandet lies within an island world characterised by small islands, bridges, white beaches and open coastal landscapes. Taking in this landscape is a good starting point for planning your trip: would you like to explore the islands actively, experience the coastal nature or take time to discover the area’s history and everyday life? In Bulandet, you can combine these interests in a variety of experiences. If you would like to spend several days immersed in island life, accommodation is available in the village.
Getting around by bike or on foot
The road between Værlandet and Bulandet is a popular cycling route: it is approximately 10.8 kilometres long and crosses six bridges. Nordsjøporten connects the two island areas for travel by car and bicycle, as well as for journeys on foot. When planning, you can choose between travelling along the connection and actively exploring by bike or on foot. Joker Bulandet rents out bicycles. Bikes can be returned at either Joker Bulandet or Joker Værlandet.
For an excursion to a distinctive landmark, consider Gjørøy Lighthouse. The hike there follows paths and crosses open terrain, and is rated easy to moderate. The lighthouse stands 22 metres above sea level; from there, views stretch across the sea, the skerries and small islands. On the hike, you can also experience Bulandet’s rich birdlife and coastal nature. If you prefer a more leisurely pace, you can walk along the island roads and visit several viewpoints with panoramic views.
Discover coastal nature and culture
Bird- and nature-watching experiences are offered in Værlandet and Bulandet. Paddling and boat trips are also among the leisure activities mentioned there. These options appeal to travellers who want to focus their stay on the coastal landscape and experiencing it from the water. A post boat island-hopping route runs from Solund via Bulandet and on to Værlandet. Fast boat services also operate between Bulandet, Askvoll and the surrounding islands.
You can also learn about the area’s history at specific locations. Bulandet Bedehus was built in 1905 with 170 seats and consecrated for religious use on 27 July 1909. The wooden chapel stands on the headland Kjempeneset on the island of Musøya. In the old schoolhouse, the Bulandet Exhibition provides an overview of everyday life and fishing in Bulandet. The Bulandet Temapark complements this perspective with a permanent exhibition and a changing exhibition on various topics.
Families and other travellers visiting together can choose from several ways to spend their days: a cycling trip across the bridges, a hike to the lighthouse, a walk to the viewpoints or insights into local life and fishing. Bulandet has shops and other services. Værlandet and Bulandet are part of the Fjordkysten Regional and Geopark, a UNESCO Global Geopark.
