Undheim brings together stories about the writer Arne Garborg and hiking trails through the Jæren landscape. You can focus your stay on culture, outdoor activities or both: Knudaheio and the Garborg Trail lead to literary and historical themes, while the trails near Undheim offer a variety of perspectives on the surrounding area.

Landscape between farmland and heath

The Hadland–Sæland–Undheim KULA cultural landscape area stretches from the modern agricultural landscape of Låg-Jæren to the heathland of Høg-Jæren. This contrast gives the area its distinctive character: agricultural land and open heath are two different sides of the same cultural landscape area. If you like to combine your holiday with walks and scenic views, you’ll find several starting points for days outdoors near Undheim.

One hike runs from Undheim via Fårevatnet, Snorestad and Krusaholen and back to Undheim. The route is 10.54 kilometres long, partly laid out as a loop and graded as moderate. It has a total elevation gain of 335 metres. This information can help you plan the hike as a standalone activity and distinguish it from a shorter visit to cultural sites.

Garborg’s sites and the Garborg Trail

Knudaheio is Arne Garborg’s summer house near Undheim and was completed in 1899. The house retains its authentic interior and furnishings. This draws attention not only to Garborg’s connection with the area, but also to the house itself and its preserved furnishings. There are also two memorials at Knudaheio dating from 2001: the stone face “All denne fagre utsyn” by Hugo Frank Wathne and the stone cairn “Tek kvar og ein sin vesle stein” by local children.

The Garborg Trail is an interactive interpretation trail featuring films and audio recordings from Arne Garborg’s texts. It runs in and around Garborgheimen, Knudaheio and Time Church; near Undheim, it is located in and around Knudaheio. In total, it comprises 57 films and audio recordings that can be accessed by mobile phone at Knudaheio, Garborgheimen and Time Church. The trail passes through woodland and over ridges. From there, the view extends far across Fårevatnet and large parts of Jæren. For your travel plans, the Garborg Trail combines literary content with the experience of the landscape, rather than treating culture and outdoor activity as separate interests.

Museum and traces of the past in the village

The Time local history museum is located on the second and third floors of Undheim samfunnshus in Undheim. Its collection includes more than 2,000 objects from Time, with a focus on rural society in the 19th and 20th centuries. If you’re interested in everyday life and agricultural history, you can make a visit to the museum a distinct cultural highlight of your stay.

A detail in the centre of Undheim also recalls the village’s history: a bridge over the Undheimsåno was built in 1901. On its south side stands a stone bearing the carved inscription “Undheim bro 1901”. Together with Knudaheio and the museum, this offers different ways to explore the past—through a house, a collection and a historic structure in the village centre.

Hiking responsibly around grazing land

Route 7 in the “Ti turar i Time” series is a loop starting in Undheim. The car park and trailhead are at Undheimshallen, north of the stadium. The route passes through grazing land: follow the signs and close every gate behind you. This is an important part of planning the route and should be kept in mind while hiking. You can choose between the 10.54-kilometre hike via Fårevatnet, Snorestad and Krusaholen and the loop on Route 7, without treating the two routes as the same.

When choosing a holiday apartment in Undheim, consider which aspects of the village you’d like to focus on during your stay: Garborg’s literary sites, the collection on rural history or time spent hiking through the landscape. More nearby destinations in our selection: Bryne, Kvernaland.
