Kvitsøy: Lighthouse, Coastal Trails and History

Hiking Trails and Small Discoveries

In eastern Kvitsøy, a marked trail leads to the Stone Cross and the ruins of St. Clement’s Church. The trail is 400 m each way; the church ruins are 200 m from the Stone Cross. The cross rises almost 4 m above the ground and formerly served as an important maritime marker and harbour cross. It is believed to be at least 1,000 years old. This trail therefore combines a manageable stretch of walking with several tangible reminders of Kvitsøy’s history.

Another hiking trail leads from Ydstebøhavn to Kvitsøy fyr lighthouse and then westwards to the sea. In the west, Turstien Vest runs between the lighthouse and Håland through open pastureland and cultivated countryside, while also offering rugged coastal scenery. Between the lighthouse and Håland, the trail splits into an inner route of 2.1 km and an outer route of 2.3 km. When planning, you can choose between two routes of different lengths, although the distance alone does not indicate how long they will take.

A signposted detour of about 250 m leads from the main trail to the Røde Skjegg day-use cabin. It has a hiking library, a wood-burning stove and an outdoor toilet. On Kvitsøy’s marked trails, stay on the marked paths and keep dogs on a leash. Langøy also has a marked trail: the 1.2 km circular route crosses pastureland and descends to the sea.

Lighthouse, Church and Lobster Museum

Kvitsøy fyr was built in 1829 and is Norway’s oldest lighthouse still in operation. Riksantikvaren listed it for protection in 1998. For anyone interested in maritime history, the lighthouse is a notable point of interest; a hiking trail also leads to it from Ydstebøhavn and continues west to the sea.

Kvitsøy Church also tells a story of different eras. Construction is believed to have begun before 1591; the church was completed around 1620 with an altarpiece and pulpit. It was Linstow’s first work in Norway and is therefore one of the country’s early examples of the Swiss style. The church also houses a soapstone baptismal font dating from around the 12th century, originally from St. Clement’s Church.

The Kvitsøy Lobster Museum is housed in an old boathouse on Grøningen. Its three exhibitions are called “The Boat and the Engine,” “Lobster – From Pot to Silver Platter” and “Fishing All Year Round.” At the lobster hatchery, visitors can see live lobsters and young lobsters. The museum thus complements the trails and historic buildings with insights into boats, fishing and lobsters.

Sea, Cycling and Getting Here

Sandrenna has a beach, a barbecue, a shelter and toilets that are open during the season. If you’d rather explore Kvitsøy by bike, the short distances and few hills make the island well suited to cycling. Six bikes are available to rent, provided by PaaHjul. Kvitsøy Event offers boat trips to Kvitsøy for groups of up to 12 passengers.

The ferry crossing between Mekjarvik and Kvitsøy takes 35 minutes and is served by M/F Vollsøy. The Kvitsøyruta express boat service also connects Kvitsøy with Mekjarvik and Stavanger: the crossing takes about 20 minutes from Mekjarvik and 35 minutes from Fiskepiren in Stavanger. For reference, the lighthouse is about 1.6 km from the ferry terminal by road, and Håland is about 1.8 km away.

The observation platform at Kvitsøy Trafikksentralen has benches and a digital information board with details about attractions, ferry times and hiking trails.
