Kvitsøy combines a rugged coastal landscape with a rich maritime history. As you follow paths through pastures and cultural landscapes, you encounter waves and skerries; at the same time, the lighthouse, churches and exhibitions tell the story of the island’s relationship with the sea. As you plan your trip, you may want to consider whether you would rather spend most of your time outdoors or set aside time to explore the island’s cultural history.
Getting There and Maritime Orientation
The Mekjarvik–Kvitsøy ferry route is currently served by the M/F Vollsøy. The crossing between Mekjarvik and Kvitsøy takes 35 minutes. At Ydstebøhavn, the Gamlekaien guest harbour has toilets, showers, overnight accommodation and electrical hookups. There is an observation platform with benches and a digital information board on the upper deck of the Trafikksentralen.
Paths Between Pastures and Coast
On Kvitsøy, the Turstien Vest runs through pastures and cultural landscapes between the lighthouse and Håland. The rugged coastal scenery of waves and skerries defines the route. The Røde Skjegg day-trip cabin is located along the Turstien Vest. It has a hiking library, a wood-burning stove and a small toilet building. The path combines an experience of the landscape with a place to pause, though the cabin itself does not have to be the destination of your walk.
The Kyststien begins at a bathing beach just north of Kvitsøy’s ferry quay. On Langøy, a marked circular route crosses pastures and continues to the sea; it is 1.2 km long and has tables and benches along the way. Sandrenna is a designated recreation area with a barbecue, a shelter and a bathing beach. The toilets there are open seasonally. For a shorter walk, the marked Krossøy trail is another option: it starts at the old quay in Leiasundet and is 400 m each way.
You can also explore Kvitsøy by bicycle. The short distances, few hills and beautiful natural surroundings make cycling here especially appealing for families with young children. You can choose between a bike ride and the various walking trails and paths. The marked routes vary in their described landscapes and lengths; the Krossøy trail is 400 m each way, while the circular route on Langøy is 1.2 km long.
Churches, Lighthouse and Island History
Construction of Kvitsøy Church is believed to have begun before 1591 and to have been completed around 1620, with the altarpiece and pulpit. Its interior and exterior are protected under the Norwegian Cultural Heritage Act. The original altarpiece, created by Lauritz snekker around 1620, was returned to the church in 2003. Distinct from this is St. Clement’s Church, considered Norway’s first sailors’ church.
Kvitsøy Lighthouse was built in 1829 and is Norway’s oldest lighthouse still in operation. In Leiasundet, the stone cross rises almost 4 m above the ground; it served as a navigational marker and harbour cross. Both examples illustrate how closely the island’s history is connected to navigation and seafaring.
Insights into Fishing and Everyday Life
The Kvitsøy Lobster Museum explores lobster fishing, the fishing industry and life on the island. Its exhibits include the furnishings of a traditional fishing household, as well as boats and engines. The museum opens sporadically; contact a guide to arrange a tour. The Kvitsøy Lobster Hatchery offers another perspective on lobsters: visitors can learn about their life cycle, from egg to larva to young lobster. The permanent exhibition at Galleri Lauritz Haaland includes several works by Haaland. Kvitsøy Guiden with Rolf Skretting, known as Kvitsøy guiden, offers guided tours around the island.
