Åkra: Beaches, Hiking Trails and Fishing History
Accommodation in Åkra
Åkra offers more than one reason to spend the day outdoors: Åkrasanden brings together the beach and water sports, while marked trails through Åkramarka lead to viewpoints and other hiking destinations. The town’s fishing history is also part of its character. You can plan your trip around whether you’d rather spend time at the beach, hike a longer route or discover Åkrehamn as part of the “Time Travel” experience.
Åkrasanden: Beach, Sculpture and Water Sports
Åkrasanden is a long, child-friendly beach and has been awarded the Blue Flag environmental label. At the far end of Rabinowitzplass at Åkrasanden stands “Tid,” a glass and metal sculpture. It is about 180 cm tall and has been there since 2019. The beach is also a popular kitesurfing spot and is well suited to windsurfing. Because of the strong winds and open sea, winter is the high season for windsurfers. If you’re making water sports and the beach the focus of your trip, this seasonal difference is worth bearing in mind when planning; the other experiences described offer a different focus.
Hikes with Different Route Options
From Åkra, well-marked trails in Åkramarka head towards Kopervik and continue south towards Skudeneshavn. One specific route option runs from Åkrasanden to Ferkingstad: the round trip is 6 km in total and takes about two hours, with around 3 km and one hour each way. The marked trail begins at Læringsverkstedet Åkrasanden barnehage in Åkrehamn. At the Åkra starting point, the route is marked and clearly visible on the ground along the upper edge of the beach.
There are also various ways to extend your outing within Åkramarka. Kinnebu lies at the highest point of the route and offers panoramic views over West Karmøy and the sea. Steinsfjellet is an old hill fort on the last rise along the trail, before it descends to the plain in front of Åkrehamn. There are tables and benches along the Speiderplassen route, and barbecue facilities are available there in summer. After a break, you can continue towards Søre Sålefjell or take a loop back to the car park via Vaulen.
Fishing History in Åkrehamn
The “Time Travel” experience in Åkrehamn includes a town walk and a museum tour about fishing history with a herring worker. It also includes a boat trip aboard the Rima with a fisherman to Mortholmen Herring Saltery. These experiences offer a different focus from the beach and hiking trails: they explore the history of fishing and places connected with it.
Which Focus Suits Your Trip?
When looking for a holiday apartment in Åkra, the activities you’d like to enjoy each day can be a helpful starting point. Åkrasanden offers the beach and water sports, while Åkramarka has marked trails and several ways to extend a hike or turn it into a loop. If you’re particularly interested in fishing history, you can also include the experience in Åkrehamn in your trip. Families may want to consider the beach, which is described as child-friendly; for hikes, the specific distance and time estimates and the route options mentioned can help you plan your day.
There is parking by an outbuilding for the route through Åkramarka. From Rv 47, turn onto Myrdalsvegen shortly after Åkra centre and drive to the end, then continue along a gravel road to the fork.
