Skjeberg appeals to travellers who want to include cultural history and a forest hike in their holiday plans. Storedal Cultural Centre offers a cultural focus with its park and cultural grounds, exhibition and sensory garden. A quieter activity is the circular walk to Krysstjern: it follows good paths through the forest and around the water. The cholera cemetery at Sandbakken and the medieval Skjeberg Church add further historical highlights. Which of these experiences you choose to make the focus of your stay may also shape your search for a holiday rental in Skjeberg.

Art, Gardens and Rock Carvings at Storedal

Storedal Cultural Centre is home to the sound sculpture “Ode til lyset” by Arnold Haukeland, with music by Arne Nordheim, an outdoor amphitheatre and a sensory garden with more than 200 plants. The grounds bring together sound art and gardens; the diversity of plants is a striking feature of the sensory garden. The gardens are open to the public at all times, and guided tours can be booked.

An exhibition about rock carvings adds to these impressions: it features around 30 different motifs, reconstructed from various locations in Østfold. Visitors interested in culture will find not only the sculpture and garden here, but also an exhibition featuring motifs from several places in Østfold. Storedal Cultural Centre also includes a cultural centre building. Its rooms can be hired for courses, exhibitions, concerts, meetings and celebrations.

A Quiet Place with a Turbulent History

The restored cholera cemetery at Sandbakken, now open to the public, commemorates the great pandemic of 1834, considered the largest pandemic since the Black Death of 1349. Eighteen people are buried in the cemetery. The memorial stone records their names, dates of death and ages, bringing their individual stories to light.

Important information for your visit: the cholera cemetery is accessible only on foot. Vehicles must be parked in the municipal car park at Sandbakken barne- og ungdomsskole. Skjeberg Church offers another historical point of interest: the medieval church was built in the 12th century. If you are interested in older buildings and local history, you can include these themes in your holiday plans alongside a visit to the cemetery.

A Forest Hike and a Rest at Guslund

The circular walk to Krysstjern in Skjebergmarka is suitable for both families and hikers. It is about 6.4 km long, takes approximately two hours and is considered moderately difficult. Good paths lead through the forest and around the water; the route offers a nature experience in peaceful surroundings. Its length, approximate duration and difficulty rating give you concrete points of reference when deciding whether a hike suits your holiday.

Another place to take a break is the shelter at Guslund in Skjeberg. It is available year-round and free of charge, with a fire pit just outside. For pilgrims, the shelter offers a place to rest and spend the night. Skjeberg therefore caters to a range of travel interests: culture and history, a circular hike, or a place for pilgrims to take a break.

When choosing a holiday rental in Skjeberg, you can consider which of these experiences you want to shape your stay. If you mainly want to explore the garden, sculpture and exhibition, the cultural attractions are an obvious focus; for active days, the circular walk to Krysstjern is a destination in its own right.
