Waterways and Industrial History

Ise lies eight kilometres northeast of the city centre, where the Isoa (Iseelva) flows into the Nipa, a bay of the Glomma. The drop in the Iseelva between Isesjøen and Nipa was harnessed by a sawmill and a mill. Waterways are therefore part of not only the town’s setting but also its industrial history. Ise is an old industrial site, where iron and metal goods industries were later established. The industrial landscape along the Isoa in Ise is of considerable cultural-historical and scenic value. It includes the remains of Ise Brug at Isefossen, as well as other industrial sites in Ise. The railway line is also important for understanding this history: the opening of the eastern section of the Østfoldbanen in 1882 gave a significant boost to Ise’s industrial development. Trails and Climbing at Østtorphytta

Østtorphytta can be reached from the car park on Knatterudfjellet via two forest routes of different lengths. The easy forest track is 1.9 kilometres long; the easy, blue-marked forest trail is 2.5 kilometres long. Both distances are one way. This means you can choose a route based on its length and type without confusing the two: the shorter route follows a forest track, while the longer one follows a blue-marked trail. Each distance refers to the route from the car park to the cabin.

A climbing park open to everyone is located on the slope above Østtorphytta. It consists of two different climbing courses and was completed in September 2021. Together with the forest routes, it makes for a specific day-trip destination where you can choose between walking to the cabin and taking on the climbing courses. There are specific reference points for cycling travellers, too. The final section of the cycling route to Ise follows Riksvei 22 and is suitable for somewhat more experienced cyclists. This assessment applies specifically to the final section; it does not automatically describe the difficulty of an entire route. Another cycling route mentioned leads to Børtevannet and reaches the former Ise railway station after approximately 8 to 9 kilometres. The approximate distance and the former station give you a recognisable reference point for planning your ride, while the section along Riksvei 22 provides separate information about arriving by bicycle.
