Surviving traces and heritage protection

Walls still stand at Østre and Vestre Otteid. At Vestre Otteid, the Kjerrat is also partially preserved. The Otteid Canal and the Kjerrat were designated cultural heritage sites by the municipality of Marker in 1997; the area of the Otteid Canal is designated as a special conservation area. These designations help explain the historical significance of the structures and place them in the context of the cultural heritage. They give a stay a different focus from a day set aside mainly for swimming or paddling.

Swimming and paddling on Stora Lee

Østre Otteid is a swimming spot on the freshwater lake Stora Lee. The Østre Otteid outdoor recreation area is located on Otteidvika and is equipped for swimming; it is also set up for small-boat recreation. This offers a clear alternative to the historical themes: instead of focusing on the history of the canal and customs, you can devote more of your stay to time on the water.

In the surrounding area, both short and long canoe and kayak expeditions are possible on Stora Lee. From there, paddlers can continue on to the Dalsland Canal. The choice between a shorter and a longer expedition offers different ways to plan your day without requiring you to commit to a particular route.

The Otteid Trail in the area around the Otteid Canal comprises three routes of different lengths.
