Marker brings together different stories and experiences: fortifications tell of former border defences, while the locks and industrial area in Ørje offer insights into the history of the Halden Canal. There are also waymarked trails and cycling routes. When planning your trip together, you can decide whether to focus on cultural history, water-based experiences or cycling.

Fortresses and historic sites

Basmo Fortress was built in the late 17th century as part of the Oplandske fortifications on the road between Stockholm and Christiania. The site stands on a rise between Lake Rødenessjøen and Lake Hemnessjøen. A significant cultural heritage site, Basmo Fortress is being restored and preserved for the future. History and landscape are equally important here: the fortress stands high between two lakes and recalls its former role on an important road.

The Ørje forts are also part of the history of border fortifications. They were built in 1902–1903 against Sweden and are part of a waymarked nature and cultural trail between the defensive structures. Those interested in the forts can include the trail as a way to experience nature and cultural history together. A waymarked trail to Nordre Fort starts at the E18 above the canal bridge.

Another historic highlight is the medieval Rødenes Church. It is believed to have been built in the first half of the 13th century. This cautious dating preserves the distinctive character of its early history. Together with the fortifications, the church offers a different perspective on Marker’s past: a medieval church stands alongside later military structures.

Locks, industrial history and the Halden Canal

The Ørje locks have a total lift of 10 metres. They are still operated by hand, as they have been since opening in 1860. This makes the locks especially interesting for anyone keen on technology and the history of the canal. Ørje is also a starting point for boat trips, cycling tours and paddling experiences on the Halden Canal.

Ørje Brug, an industrial site dating from the late 19th century, is part of the area’s industrial history. A wood-grinding mill operated there from 1886 to 1942. Most of the buildings have been preserved, and restoration work has continued in recent years. The history of the former production can thus be explored at a site where its architectural traces are still part of the area today.

Routes and shared travel interests

Cycling also offers different ways to explore the wider area. The historic Unionsleden cycling route runs from Moss in Norway to Karlstad in Sweden, passing through Marker. National Cycle Route No. 9 passes through the municipalities of Marker and Aremark. Both routes take you beyond Marker’s municipal boundaries, but they do not follow the same course or lead to the same destination. When planning your holiday, you can therefore consider whether you would prefer a historic route between Norway and Sweden or a national cycling route through two municipalities.

Recurring community events include the Flyktningemarsjen, organised annually by Rødenes IL. It starts at Skogstad Farm in Rødenes and follows two escape routes: one heads towards Sweden, while the other returns to the starting point. The annual SOOTspelet is performed in Ørje in summer.

When choosing a holiday rental in Marker, you can start by considering the kind of trip you want: fortress and church history offer a different focus from locks, industrial history or cycling tours. Ørje brings together several of these themes with experiences on the Halden Canal; the fortifications and Rødenes Church add another historical perspective.
