Sør-Fron: Hiking, Culture and Experiences
Accommodation in Sør-Fron
Sør-Fron combines the landscapes of Gudbrandsdalen with trails between valley and mountain, cultural discoveries and activities for active days. The Gudbrandsdalslågen flows through the municipality’s valley; Sør-Fron stretches across both sides of Gudbrandsdalen, from Rondane in the northeast to Valdres in the southwest. When choosing a holiday apartment, it is therefore worth first considering which places and experiences matter most for your trip.
Hiking trails from Frya to Gålå
The Pilegrimsleia runs from Frya to Skar through the entire municipality of Sør-Fron and is well marked for hiking. This offers a practical way to get to know the area along a longer route. For information about the route, accommodation, alternative transport or cultural history, visit the Dale-Gudbrand Pilgrim Centre.
Another network of trails leads from valley to mountain. It makes hikes from Harpefoss to Gålå or Sulsetra possible. These destinations give your hike a direction: when planning your trip, you can decide whether you want to hike uphill from Harpefoss to Gålå or to Sulsetra. The Pilegrimsleia and this network of trails are distinct points of reference for hiking through Sør-Fron.
The cultural trail along the Skodalsåa offers a different perspective. It runs from Svintjønna, at an altitude of 956 metres, through Skurdalslia and Skurdalsgrenda to the Lågen. Its route links several named stops and landscapes; the elevation refers to Svintjønna. If this trail interests you, you can consider it as a separate focus alongside hikes on the Pilegrimsleia.
Culture around the farm, art and stage
At Dale-Gudbrands gard, the Tusenårsstien presents the farm’s thousand-year history in three ways: visually, through information boards and with its own app. This lets you explore the same history through different approaches. The cultural trail and the Tusenårsstien each have their own focus: one follows the Skodalsåa through several named areas, while the other is devoted to the history of the farm.
Peer Gynt has been performed at Gålåvatnet in Sør-Fron since 1989. The Peer Gynt Cultural Festival takes place every year in early August. Major cross-country skiing competitions are held at the Gålå Ski Arena every year. These recurring cultural and sporting events may factor into your travel plans if you would like to time your stay around a performance, the festival or a competition.
Harpefoss Kunstsarena was established in 2014 as an art and artist-in-residence centre. Exhibitions are held both inside the buildings and outdoors. Harpefoss Hotel is also associated with events, concerts and festivals, as well as artist residencies and workshops. Rudi Gard offers concerts and culinary experiences. If you are planning a culture-focused trip, you can consider these different offerings alongside the hiking trails and historic sites.
Active days and a trip to the water park
Fron Badeland is located in Harpefoss, Sør-Fron. Its facilities include a 25-metre swimming pool, a 12.5-metre therapy pool, a diving pool, a climbing wall, children’s pools and a 48-metre water slide. The facilities therefore include several pools as well as climbing and sliding activities. For families who would like to plan time in the water alongside their hikes, the water park is a practical destination to include in the itinerary; the children’s pool is a dedicated part of the facilities.
Stolpejakten also combines exercise with a clear goal: the municipality of Sør-Fron organises it every spring and summer. It runs from 1 May to 31 October. Posts are placed on mountain peaks and in the surrounding area, and their codes are scanned using a mobile phone. The set dates make it easy to fit this activity into your travel plans.
When looking for a holiday apartment, you can start by deciding which of these activities you want to shape your trip: hiking the Pilegrimsleia, exploring culture on the cultural trail and at Dale-Gudbrands gard, or visiting Fron Badeland in Harpefoss. The pages for Harpefoss, Sør-Fron, Tofte, Gålå and Hundorp offer further guidance within the destination.
