Lillehammer offers a wide variety of travel experiences: historic houses and museums sit alongside trails for nature watching and cycling. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Lillehammer, you can start by considering whether cultural history or outdoor experiences will shape your stay more.

Maihaugen, Museums and Olympic History

Maihaugen is Norway’s largest open-air museum outside Oslo. The museum includes more than 200 historic buildings from different periods. Visitors can explore what life was like 200 years ago. The range of buildings and the historical perspective make Maihaugen a special destination for anyone interested in ways of life in the past.

Also located at Maihaugen in Lillehammer is the Norwegian Olympic Museum. It presents the history of the Olympic Games, from the first Games to the present day. The Lillehammer Art Museum focuses on art: it is the only art museum in Innlandet, and its collection includes more than 1,800 works dating from the 19th century to the present day. The museum is just a few minutes’ walk from Lillehammer railway and bus stations.

Bjerkebæk was the home of Nobel laureate Sigrid Undset. In summer, guided tours in English are offered daily, allowing you to experience the house as it was in the 1930s. The garden includes perennial flower beds, herbs and fruit trees. As well as exploring Undset’s home, you can also take a closer look at the garden’s design.

Lysgårdsbakkene Ski Jumping Arena was built for the 1994 Winter Olympic Games. The Norwegian Road Museum complex explores a different subject area: it comprises the Norwegian Road Museum, the Norwegian Vehicle History Museum and the Norwegian Rock Blasting Museum. Lillehammer’s cultural attractions therefore cover art and sports history, as well as the history of roads, vehicles and rock blasting.

Trails, Birdwatching and Cycling

The Mesna Cultural Trail climbs about 200 metres along waterfalls and rapids to Collets bru. The route combines an ascent with views of waterfalls and rapids.

Lågendeltaet Nature Reserve was established in 1990 to preserve an important and distinctive wetland, including its natural vegetation and wildlife. Its particularly diverse and interesting birdlife is also protected. For birdwatching, there is also the Lågen walk: it can begin at Lillehammer station and leads to a birdwatching tower with benches and tables.

If you would like to explore Lillehammer by bike, there are well-maintained cycle paths that make it easy to reach attractions in the town and nearby areas. One longer, specific ride is Panoramavegen: this approximately 20 km round trip runs from Lillehammer to Brattberg farm and offers views of Lillehammer and the southern part of Lake Mjøsa. The approximate total distance and out-and-back route give you a starting point for planning your own ride, without specifying a particular journey time.

You can also choose from different ways of getting here: the Lillehammer region is located on the E6 and can be reached by car, train or bus. When choosing your holiday apartment, you can use your travel interests as a starting point: museum visits, birdwatching and cycling offer different ways to spend your stay.
