Fåberg – Museums, Mountains and Family Experiences
Accommodation in Fåberg
Fåberg offers more than one reason to enjoy a varied holiday: vehicle history, Olympic bobsleigh, family attractions and hiking destinations shape the range of things to do. There is also Fåberg Church and a cultural trail to rock carvings. You can plan your stay around the experiences that interest your family most – from a museum visit to a day in the mountains.
Museums and Vehicle History
More than 160 vehicles are on display at the Norsk Kjøretøyhistorisk Museum. The collection includes cars, motorcycles, mopeds and bicycles dating from the early 20th century to the 1990s. This broad time span brings different developments in vehicle history into focus; at the same time, the variety of vehicle types offers several possible interests for a museum visit.
The Norsk Vegmuseum complex comprises three museums and a large museum park with indoor and outdoor exhibitions. Almost 5,000 m² of space is available for the indoor exhibitions. Those who enjoy moving between different types of exhibitions will find a different setting here than in a single collection. Together with the vehicle museum, it offers culture enthusiasts a broad choice, without limiting all museum visits to the same subject.
Olympic Track and Active Experiences
Fåberg Olympiske Bob-og Akebane was built for the 1994 Olympic Games and is Scandinavia’s only bobsleigh and luge track. This makes it a distinctive part of Fåberg’s sporting attractions. On the track’s Hjulbob, speeds of 100 km/h and forces of 3 G can be reached – a tangible sense of the forces involved in this sport.
Hunderfossen Eventyrpark also offers a wide range of options: more than 60 attractions and activities are aimed at children and adults. The offerings include family rafting. Families can make this a shared experience; for groups with different interests, the park has many other attractions and activities to choose from as well.
Another option for being active, Jorekstad Fritidsbad has indoor and outdoor pools. This means that visitors can choose between sporting experiences at the bobsleigh and luge track and a leisure pool with different types of pools.
Mountain Peaks, Hiking Trails and Cross-Country Skiing Areas
In Fåberg Østfjell, Nevelfjell is one of numerous hiking destinations. At 1,091.5 m above sea level, it is Fåberg’s highest mountain. Balbergkampen, a peak east of Hove, offers views of Fåberg and Lillehammer as well as the well-known Balberghuska. In Fåberg Vestfjell lies Prestkjerringa, whose summit is the second-highest in the area; it is a popular hiking destination with beautiful views.
More landscapes for walking and winter activities can be found on the Fåberg Vestside. Bakseterkjølen is a summer-farm area near Rudsbygd and Jørstadhøgda, with an extensive network of hiking trails and cross-country ski trails for summer and winter. The network extends to Hokna and other municipalities. Kinnkjølen-Ruka lies between Jørstadmoen or Baklia and Saksumdalen. There are numerous hiking trails and ski pistes there. The two areas therefore offer different points of reference for your interests: Bakseterkjølen is specifically associated with a network of hiking and cross-country ski trails for different seasons, while Kinnkjølen-Ruka is noted for its hiking trails and ski pistes.
Cultural Trail and Fåberg Church
Fåberg Church is a timber-framed cruciform church built in 1727, near Fåberg in the municipality of Lillehammer. Beside the church stands Fåbergsteinen, a runestone that was probably one of three standing stones at the church. Those interested in history and cultural landscapes can combine these sites with the Fåberg Kultursti: the easy-to-walk trail leads from the church to the rock carvings at Drotten. There are six rest areas with benches along the way; shorter loops are also possible for families.
When choosing your holiday rental, you could first consider which focus best suits your trip: museums and culture, family attractions, sporting experiences or hiking destinations. Fåberg brings together these different themes, while the mountain peaks and areas mentioned each offer their own points of reference for activities. You can find another destination page at Lillehammer.
