Grotli is a mountain village for trips that can focus on cycling, hiking and skiing. Gamle Strynefjellsvegen runs between Grotli and Videsæter; trails also lead from Grotli to mountain destinations, and there are groomed cross-country ski trails in winter. When choosing a holiday apartment in Grotli, it is therefore worth first considering the activities you have planned.

Experience Gamle Strynefjellsvegen by bike

The Gamle Strynefjellsvegen National Tourist Route is 27 kilometres long and runs between Grotli and Videsæter. Cyclists are advised to start in Grotli. Parts of the route are gravel – a specific difference you can take into account when planning your trip. If you want to explore the route by bike, you have a clear starting point and know the length of the route. The road is also a defining destination in Grotli for a stay where the ride itself is the main focus.

Mountain hikes and trails to the huts

Grotli is a starting point for short and long mountain hikes. Krosshø and Skidulaupen are among the best-known mountain hikes in Grotli. One specific longer hike follows a T-marked trail from here to Skridulaupbu and takes about seven hours. The easiest route to Danskehytta follows a marked trail and takes about four hours. Danskehytta is located in the southern Tafjordfjella at an altitude of 1,440 metres, in a rugged, weather-exposed mountain area.

Another destination in the area is Lake Kjerringtjønne, at an altitude of around 1,100 metres. It lies between Grotli Høyfjellshotel and Danskehytta; from the hotel, you can reach it on foot in about 40 minutes. Several smaller lakes are located nearby. These destinations differ in altitude and walking time, offering various points of reference when planning your hiking days.

Cross-country trails, skiing and ski touring

In Grotli, you can ski on groomed trails as well as off-piste. The terrain around the ski lift and towards Krosshø is suitable for both beginners and experts, inside and outside the alpine ski centre. A marked DNT hiking trail or a marked DNT cross-country ski trail also starts at Grotli Høyfjellshotel. There are numerous opportunities for ski touring in the Tafjordfjella and Strynefjellet from Grotli.

Snow conditions are another special consideration when planning your trip: Grotli often has enough snow for skiing well into June. This is not a guarantee of specific conditions on any particular day of your trip, but it does indicate that skiing is sometimes possible here into early summer. You can consider different forms of winter sports, from groomed cross-country trails to skiing off-piste and ski touring.

Getting your bearings locally

Grotli Høyfjellshotel, on Rv. 15 across Strynefjellet, is a starting and finishing point for trips into the Tafjordfjella and Breheimen/Jostedalsbreen. Buses stop at the hotel on Rv. 15 several times a day. There is also a large car park and several information boards from the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, Statens vegvesen. The hotel opened in 1905; its historic atmosphere, with wooden walls and a crackling fireplace, can still be experienced today.

If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Grotli, you can base your decision on your travel plans: the cycling route, marked mountain trails and various skiing options give your stay different points of focus. More destinations: Nordberg, Bismo, Skjåk.
