Mountain Nature in Two National Parks
Breheimen National Park lies in the municipalities of Skjåk, Lom and Luster. Reinheimen National Park is home to a largely untouched mountain ecosystem. The wildlife there includes reindeer, wolverines, golden eagles, peregrine falcons and ptarmigan. In the western parts of Skjåk, marked trails run through the national park and along its edges. A Historic Road and a Range of Cycling Routes
The Gamle Strynefjellsvegen runs between Grotli in Skjåk and Videdalen in Stryn; on the Skjåk side, the access point is at Grotli. As a historic road attraction, it is characterised by its hand-built stone walls. The tourist road crossing the mountains was protected in 2009. It is a reason in its own right for anyone interested in historic roads to explore the area. Grotli is the specific point of reference on the Skjåk side of the route.
Skjåk can also be explored by bicycle from different perspectives: there are numerous cycle paths and touring routes, including routes for mountain bikes, gravel bikes and road bikes. The different types of bicycle provide a useful guide when looking for a suitable tour idea, without making any claims about the route or difficulty of individual trails. The municipality also has around 200 lakes with trout and approximately 250 kilometres of rivers. These figures make water another defining feature of the landscape.
Art, Tradition and the History of Water Management
In Bismo, Galleri Mathilde is a gallery and cultural meeting place showcasing local art and crafts. It hosts the annual Skjåkutstilling, which is both a longstanding summer tradition and a meeting place for art and culture in Skjåk. Countryfestivalen is held every year at Skjåkøygarden. If you want to include local culture alongside nature when planning your trip, you can consider these different cultural attractions; they represent art and crafts as well as a recurring festival tradition.
The Kulturstig at Aursjoen is a circular trail with information boards about historic water channels and irrigation systems. These systems were important to agriculture in Skjåk for generations. Part of the trail follows a historic water channel that still supplies farms in the valley. The Kulturstig thus combines a walk around the area with the history of irrigation and its continuing role for farms in the valley.
Places for Different Interests
Several farms in Skjåk produce local food from their own ingredients and combine farming with accommodation and hospitality. They give guests an insight into farm life, along with food, stories and encounters with the people who live there. This offers a special perspective on the area: the travel experience includes not only landscapes and activities, but also agricultural work and local food.
Bismo lies on National Highway 15 and is the municipal centre of Skjåk. Shops, accommodation and places to eat are available there. If these amenities matter when choosing where to stay in a holiday apartment, Bismo is a specific point of reference. Sota Sæter, meanwhile, is a staffed mountain lodge in Skjåk at the entrance to Breheimen National Park. It offers a different point of reference from the municipal centre if the national park is the focus of your trip.
