Nord-Torpa combines a varied cultural landscape with trails through forests and open mountain terrain. The northern part of Torpa lies between the Dokkaelva and Synna/Livasselva rivers, in the direction of Langsua National Park. For your stay, you have a clear choice: Would you like to hike, discover a range of summer trails, use a cross-country ski trail or include cultural sites as well?

Mountain Scenery and Cultural Landscape

Synnfjellet consists of extensive open mountain terrain, a belt of birch forest and a lower belt of coniferous forest. It is the largest mountain area in Nordre Land municipality. Spåtindtoppen reaches 1,414 metres and is the highest point in the municipality. Farmland and mountain farms are also part of Nord-Torpa’s varied cultural landscape. Open mountain scenery and agricultural land thus form distinct yet complementary aspects of the area.

If you’d like to experience different landscapes while hiking, Nylsfjellet has a well-used trail that passes through forest and continues above the tree line. The route is signposted and marked, has a viewpoint and a car park. Mountain hiking trails are also available on the well-used routes from Svinningsæterbrua to Spåtind and from Hugulia to Lenningen. Spåtindtoppen is listed as a viewpoint.

Trails for Different Outings

Other trails each have their own character. The trail on Skjervungfjellet is suitable for hiking, horse riding and mountain biking. The Røssjøkollane route offers a viewpoint and fishing opportunities; it leads to Røssjøkollhytta in Langsua National Park. If you’d rather plan a circular walk, you can choose the Folungtjena trail, which loops around a pond. Facilities along the trail include a barbecue area, a shelter, a fishing spot and a car park.

The Skardberga nature trail is also a circular route and offers fishing opportunities and a shelter. Grønvold turvei leads from a sawmill and a mill to a bathing area. Pusrud lysløype is used as a local walking trail in summer. At Bergevassknotten, a short trail leads from a cabin area to a viewpoint; it is signposted and marked with reflectors. These differences can shape your plans: sometimes a viewpoint is the main attraction, sometimes a circular walk, fishing or a trail with several listed activities.

When planning a winter trip, you can distinguish these trails from the summer routes. Firefjellsstien is a new DNT trail created in 2022 across four peaks.

One cultural site in Nord-Torpa is Åmot kirke, an octagonal wooden church dating from 1823 and a listed church. It complements the nature and trail experiences with a tangible glimpse into the area’s architectural history.
