Dokka – Nature, Rail Cycling and Culture

In Dokka, nature experiences meet a distinctive railway tradition: on the disused Valdresbanen line, you can ride a rail bike on the tracks between Dokka and Hov. At the same time, nearby Dokkadeltaet, the Folkestien circular trail and the Lands Museum invite you to discover very different sides of the area. Dokkadeltaet and Randsfjord

The nearby Dokkadeltaet nature reserve lies where the Etna and Dokka rivers flow into Randsfjord. More than 220 bird species have been observed in the area. If you would like to spot birds, there is a bird hide at Dokkadeltaet, accessible from Dokka by heading south along Jevnakervegen. You can also combine nature with recreational activities on the water: Dokkadeltaet is considered easily accessible and is used, among other things, for boating and fishing.

The rail cycling route also runs alongside Dokkadeltaet and Randsfjord. It combines a ride on the railway tracks with views of the landscape by the water. The route between Dokka and Hov is 23.7 kilometres long. This gives you a specific point of reference if you would like to make rail cycling an important part of your trip.

Valdresbanen: Rail Cycling and Railway Heritage

The Valdresbanen tracks and facilities associated with railway operations are considered cultural heritage sites worthy of preservation. Dokka is a terminus on the line. Rail cycling is therefore not only an activity on a disused railway track, but also takes you along a railway line whose facilities are part of the local cultural heritage.

Bicycle baskets, first-aid kits, bicycle helmets and yellow vests are available at Dokka station for the rail cycling activity. This equipment is part of the cycling offer; it does not indicate the duration or pace of the trip. Several information boards about cultural heritage and nature are also located along a former railway track from Dokka to Naturhuset in Odnes. The former railway connection thus also serves as a place to learn about these topics.

Folkestien and the Lands Museum

Folkestien is a marked 5-kilometre circular trail. Information boards along the route cover nature, cultural heritage and the landscape. The trail is adapted for wheelchair users. There is also a fishing platform at Granngardshølen on Folkestien, designed for people with reduced mobility. The Lands Museum is located above the centre of Dokka and is a cultural and natural history museum. It includes more than 30 historic buildings. The Thomlebygningen houses original works of art by Peder Aadnes. The museum offers exhibitions and events throughout the year. Alongside activities on the circular trail or rail cycling route, it offers a distinct focus on cultural and natural history.
