Nordvernes – Hiking Trails and Cultural History
Accommodation in Nordvernes
Nordvernes offers many different reasons to explore: a marked trail leads to a local story, an old vicarage barn preserves traces of the past, and hikes take you across rock and sand with views of the sea. When choosing your holiday rental, it may help to first consider which of these experiences you want to make the focus of your trip.
Jo i Revva: Trail and Story
The trail to Jo i Revva begins at the workshop in Kvalvika and initially follows the road towards Nordværnes. Along the way, turn off towards Rønvika; above the houses, a marked path continues to the destination. There, by a crevice in the rock, an information sign tells the story of Jo i Revva and includes a QR code. The route and the information come together in one outing: the trail leads to a specific place where the story is also brought to life on site. If you enjoy spending time outdoors and are also interested in local stories, this is a fitting focus for planning your excursions.
A Historic Barn and Traces from the Iron Age
The Prestegårdsfjøset, the old former vicarage barn, stands at Nordværnes. It was built around 1770 and has a roof made of Alta slate. In the 1970s, it was moved in its entirety from the Rødøy Prestegård vicarage to Nordværnes. Its construction date, roofing material and relocation each tell a different part of its story: the building is old, its slate roof gives it a distinctive architectural feature, and its present location is the result of a move. Iron Age graves have also been registered at Nord-Værnes. Together, the barn and the graves offer historical points of interest that differ from a hike or excursion focused mainly on nature. When planning, you can weigh up whether these cultural traces matter as much to your trip as the trails and scenery.
Hiking at Under Værnestinden
The hike Under Værnestinden crosses rocky terrain and then follows a sandy beach to the destination. There, you’ll find a fire pit and good opportunities to play in the sand and in the tidal zone, enjoy a leisurely fire, fish and take in the sea views. Wildlife can also be a highlight of the outing: during the hike, you have a good chance of seeing harbour porpoises surface to breathe at sea level. The route is well suited to families. There is room for about two cars at the starting point—a practical detail to bear in mind when travelling there. These features give the hike a different character from the trail to Jo i Revva: here, the focus is on the sequence of rocky terrain and beach, and on the experiences at the destination.
Another Hike at Krumvatnet
Near Nordværnes, the Krumvatnet route passes through low-growing deciduous woodland and between moss-covered rocks. After most of the climb, the terrain becomes boggy and wet before the descent to the lake begins and the ground becomes drier again. These changing sections of trail are an important part of the hike description; they differ markedly from the rocky terrain and beach along the route at Under Værnestinden. The marked starting point for the hike to Krumvatnet is 5–6 km from the turn-off to Nordværnes. So, when choosing activities to go with your holiday rental in Nordvernes, you can choose between a hike with changing woodland and ground conditions, excursions focused on cultural history, or trips with sea views.
