Rødøy: Rødøyløva, Beaches and Island Art
Accommodation in Rødøy
On Rødøya, there is plenty to do, from hiking to Rødøyløva and visiting bright beaches to exploring outdoor art and special collections. When choosing a holiday rental in Rødøy, it is worth considering which activities you want to shape your days. Hiking, beaches, art and culture each offer something different.
Hiking and beaches at Rødøyløva
The hike to Rødøyløva begins at Rødøya’s ferry and express boat terminal. The round trip is 7.5 kilometres in total. The route is approved as a National Tourist Route. It is the sixth route of its kind in the Rødøy destination and the first in Northern Norway.
Four brilliantly white beaches lie below Rødøyløva. From there, you can enjoy views of sunsets and the open sea. Storsand, the main beach, has sun loungers, a volleyball net, an outdoor shower, a toy box, a barbecue shelter and a water refill point. Before your visit, briefly check the current condition of the facilities. Storsand and other beaches are about two kilometres from Klokkergården and can be reached across easy terrain.
Art and memorial sites
The sculpture “Indre følger ytre” by Per Inge Bjørlo, unveiled in 2010, stands at Storsand. On the way to Storsand, the Naturgalleri presents ten works of art: they are mounted together in a hexagonal frame and inspired by the sea and the plant kingdom. In the park beside Rødøy kirke, in the middle of Rødøya, a monument to Edvard Havnø and a memorial plaque to Hjalmar “Hjallis” Andersen commemorate them. Here, art appears as an individual sculpture, a group of works displayed together and part of a memorial site.
Havdurbygga is a museum on Rødøya with a large private collection of old objects from the Helgeland coast. It complements the art stops with a glimpse of items from the coastal region.
Bamsehuset and outdoor experiences
Bamsehuset is Norway’s first teddy bear house and also serves as an exhibition and activity centre. The site includes a bear town, Bjørneskogen, a bear museum and a café; the collection comprises around 1,500 teddy bears. Check current opening hours and visitor information before your visit.
In the Rødøy destination, Bamsehuset is now located in Bårstua. Built in 1861, the building is the oldest surviving structure from the original rectory on Rødøya. This gives the bear house its own distinctive historical setting.
In Eventyrskogen, visitors can take a meal break at the Hans and Gretel cabin and grill over a fire bowl. A seasonal sailing trip in the four-oared boat Raudeyar offers another way to experience the islands, taking you between islands and skerries. The boat can be sailed, rowed or powered by an electric motor. Check the current availability of the seasonal trip before your journey.
Practical information
At the service building for the Rødøyløva trail in Selvågen, there is a place to refill water bottles. A shower, toilet, lockers and mobile phone charging facilities are also available there.
Each destination offers something different: Rødøyløva is the 7.5-kilometre hike, while Storsand combines a beach with facilities. Artworks, the park and the museum collection provide further cultural experiences. When choosing your holiday rental in Rødøy, consider which of these activities interest you most and which excursions you want to make the focus of your trip.
