Beiarn: Nature, Water and Living Traditions
Accommodation in Beiarn
Beiarn lies inland in Northern Norway, between Beiarfjorden and Svartisen. The municipality combines experiences by the water with a distinctive karst landscape and living traditions. If you are looking for a holiday rental, you can make your own interests the focus: is your priority fishing and paddling, nature experiences in Láhko National Park, or culture and history? Beiarn offers a range of starting points, without requiring all activities to involve the same kind of excursion.
Karst Landscape and Nature in Láhko National Park
Láhko is characterised by karst. Its distinctive features include caves, karst fissures and karst corridors, as well as natural bridges and blind valleys. This landscape gives the national park an unusual character: in addition to open natural areas, the scenery is shaped by ravines, passages and hidden valleys. In the park, the public can experience nature through simple, low-impact recreational activities that require little technical infrastructure. This appeals to travellers who want to spend time outdoors without seeking a highly developed recreational offering.
Láhko National Park lies in the municipalities of Meløy, Gildeskål and Beiarn, on Glomfjordfjellet and parts of Sundsfjordfjellet. Svartisen is also part of the wider travel area: the glacier covers 370 km² and is the largest glacier in Northern Scandinavia. Those interested in the landscape will find in Beiarn both the distinctive karst formations of Láhko and the wider natural setting of Svartisen as a point of reference for their trip.
Get Active: Beiartrimmen and Skiing
Beiartrimmen has been held annually since 2020 and is free for all participants. The digital hiking destinations can be reached on skis, snowshoes, on foot or by bicycle. These are separate from the groomed ski trails at Beiarfjellet, which the Stormfjell sports club and Beiarn Municipality prepare from around March until the end of the season.
There are also various options on the water. Beiarelva is suitable for canoeing or river kayaking, particularly along its lower reaches. Shore fishing is possible year-round at Beiarfjorden, where boats can be rented. Salmon fishing in Beiarelva has drawn many anglers to Beiarn. Beiarfjorden is suitable for rowing or paddling in good weather and calm conditions. If you want to make water activities a priority during your stay, you can take this information into account when choosing the kind of trip you want.
Discover History and Traditions
Beiarn bygdetun is located on a vicarage dating from 1857 and comprises twelve agricultural buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries. The exhibition “Det var en gang...” (“Once Upon a Time...”) brings living traditions and traditional knowledge to life through music, storytelling and traditional crafts. Alongside nature and outdoor activities, it offers a distinct cultural focus, highlighting forms of expression and inherited skills. Guided tours of the exhibition are available year-round on request via a booking form.
Another distinctive feature is the Savjord Stave Church in Beiarn, described as Norway’s northernmost stave church. If you would like to include historic architecture and local traditions in your trip, these places complement the natural experience with a cultural perspective on the municipality.
