Øydegard offers opportunities to spend time outdoors and explore local history. The Storrundt hiking trail runs between Øydegard, Kjervika and Eikrem in Straumsnes. There is also the history of the former steamboat quay, two summer villas from different periods and a building purpose-built as a museum. Depending on whether you want to focus on outdoor activities or historical topics, your stay can take on a different character.

Storrundt: a trail with different options

Storrundt is a 4.3-kilometre hiking trail. It starts in the open countryside near Øydegard golfbane and runs between Øydegard, Kjervika and Eikrem. There are several benches along the route. The signposts show local place names and the names of trees. Along the way, you will encounter both local names and signs identifying the trees beside the trail.

You can walk Storrundt with a pushchair, cycle or run. These options give you flexibility in how you get around; the trail’s 4.3-kilometre length is a useful guide when planning your day. The trail is also an option for those travelling with a pushchair. Storrundt opened in 1998.

The route leads to Eikrem, which is considered the northernmost place in the world with a naturally growing oak forest. This gives the place a distinctive feature for nature enthusiasts, in addition to its connection with the hiking trail. If you include Eikrem in your plans, you will find the route and the remarkable description of its naturally growing oak forest side by side.

Summer villas and local history

Furuly, also called the Fasting Villa, was the first summer villa in Straumsnes. It was built in the late 19th century; its first owner was the lawyer Thomas Fasting. Its name, date of construction and owner give the villa a distinct place in the history of summer villas in Straumsnes. For travellers interested in architectural and local history, Furuly is a subject in its own right, alongside the experience of nature on Storrundt.

Another summer villa is the Trumpy Villa at Solbakken. It dates from the early 20th century. It was probably supplied by Thams at Løkken verk (Thamsbanen). The two villas therefore represent different periods: Furuly was built in the late 19th century, while the Trumpy Villa dates from the early 20th century. If you are interested in historic buildings and when they were built, these details offer two distinct starting points for exploring local history.

Øydegard kai also tells the story of earlier transport links. Until 1957, the quay served as a steamboat quay; that year, the steamboat service between Kristiansund and Sunndalsøra was discontinued. This date also marks the end of the service. The Straumsnes bygdemuseum adds another cultural and historical perspective: it is the oldest building in the county built specifically as a museum.

Shape your stay around your interests

Golf is also among the local activities at Øydegard golfbane. The course is the Tingvoll golfklubb’s own six-hole golf course. If you are interested in the sport, it is a clearly defined option to consider when planning your trip. The six-hole course adds a distinct, limited-scale activity alongside the historical topics and the hiking trail.

When choosing a holiday apartment or holiday home in Øydegard, these different options can help you decide what kind of stay you want: outdoor activity on Storrundt, an interest in nature around Eikrem, or exploring the summer villas, transport history and museum. The places and topics do not have to be visited in any set order. You can decide which ones are of particular interest for your trip.
