Discover Batnfjordsøra through specific walking routes: the walk to the small boat harbour at Havna and Elvastien, with stretches along the river, a bridge and an opportunity to fish. There are also two buildings that are part of the area's cultural heritage. When planning your trip, you can choose how to balance nature experiences with local history.

The walk to Havna

For the walk to Havna (småbåthavna Batnfjordsøra), a route description updated in 2023 identifies marked hiking car parks at Kommunehuset, Nordmørsvegen 24. From there, the route heads towards Bunker Oil, passes the petrol station and continues around the outside of the houses towards the sea. It then turns left to the small boat harbour. Route conditions can change; check them before setting out.

The route gives the walk a clear direction: from Kommunehuset towards the sea, then on to the harbour. If you like planning walks around notable waypoints, the locations mentioned can help you get your bearings. The walk to Havna and Elvastien are separate local route topics, not sections of a single route described here.

Elvastien: a circular route or an out-and-back walk

On Elvastien, after about two kilometres, you’ll find a ramp by the river where fishing is possible. There is also a Stikkut registration point there. After 3.5 kilometres, the route crosses a bridge and then follows the river back to Gamlebrua. These landmarks help you follow the route in stages: first the ramp, then the bridge, followed by the return along the river.

The full route is graded blue; the out-and-back walk to the Stikkut registration point is graded green. The ratings therefore apply to different route options. For Elvastien, it is recommended that you complete the whole loop and, if needed, use the rest areas along the way for breaks. When choosing between the two options, take into account both the section of the route and its corresponding grade. Check route conditions before setting out.

Cultural heritage in Batnfjordsøra

Batnfjord gamle skule, the old school, and Batnfjord ungdomshus, a community hall, are part of Batnfjordsøra’s cultural heritage. Both are listed in the Gjemnes municipality cultural heritage plan for 2017–2028. Their names refer to two different types of buildings and give the local landscape a historical and cultural dimension. They add another perspective on Batnfjordsøra alongside the routes by the river and to the harbour.

More to explore in the wider Gjemnes destination

At Ikornneset, in the wider Gjemnes destination, you can see traces of earlier settlement. There are about ten coastal burial mounds, as well as farming terraces and traces of old farmsteads. The mounds contain varying amounts of rounded stones; the two largest are about 15 metres wide and two metres high. Their age is uncertain: they may date from the Early Iron Age, probably from the period between 0 and around 600 AD.

Another historical site in Gjemnes is Raudberggruva. Access to the mine tunnel is not permitted because it is unsafe. Nearby, the walls of the former miners’ house still stand; there is also an information board about the history of mining operations. This offers a way to explore the area’s mining history without planning a visit to the closed tunnel.

Reinsfjellet is another landmark in the wider Gjemnes area: the mountain is considered a symbol of Nordmøre and is a popular hiking destination in both summer and winter. From its 994-metre summit, the view described in the tour guide extends across large parts of Nordmøre. This offers a different focus from the local routes in Batnfjordsøra: here, the mountain and summit views take centre stage, while there the focus is on the routes to Havna and along the river.
