Gjemnes combines scenic mountain summits with waterside paths and traces of a long history. Reinsfjellet is a well-known landmark of Nordmøre and a popular hiking destination in both summer and winter. At the same time, burial mounds, churches and a museum complex tell the story of the area's cultural history. You can plan your trip around whether you want to explore the outdoors or discover historic sites and buildings.
Mountain hikes with a range of destinations
The summit of Reinsfjellet is 994 metres high. From the top, the view described for the hike extends across large parts of Nordmøre. The usual ascent follows the road from Torvikdalen; by the house at the fitness trail post, there is a place to shelter. When planning the hike, you can use these details as a guide for the ascent and the summit view.
A circular hike with several summits is offered by “Torvikbukt 6 topper”. It crosses six mountains around the village: Holtafjellet at 610 m, Storlimana at 532 m, Nebba at 658 m, Røtå at 661 m, Reinsfjellet at 994 m and Nøssa at 563 m. The starting point is Gjemneshallen in the centre of Torvikbukt. The six elevations give you a specific overview of the summits included in the circular hike, but do not indicate how long it takes to complete.
There is also a described destination for winter activities: the ski tour to Silsethytta by Silsetvannet follows groomed trails through gently rolling terrain and open pine forest. Along the way, there are views of the Romsdal mountains. The scenery on this tour therefore differs from that of the summit hikes around Reinsfjellet and Torvikbukt.
Paths by the river and coast
Elvastien runs along the river in Batnfjordsøra. After about two kilometres, there is a place to fish at a ramp. You can reach the path from Molde or Kristiansund via the E39 to Batnfjordsøra; parking is available at the municipal building. The riverside path thus combines a walk with a specifically identified fishing spot. The approximate distance helps you locate the fishing spot along the path.
Ikornneset has a swimming area with a visitor quay, as well as a walking path or cultural heritage route. The area is also marked by traces of the past: there are around ten coastal burial mounds, along with agricultural terraces and traces of former farms. The burial mounds are made of varying amounts of rounded stones. The two largest are approximately 15 metres wide and 2 metres high. Their age is uncertain; they may date from the Early Iron Age, probably from the period between 0 and around 600 AD.
The short Strandstien Angvik highlights local culture and history. The path is lit in the evening. The section by Angvik Gamle Handelssted is described as accessible to wheelchair users and as having a manageable gradient. This description applies to the section by the historic trading post; the other details about Strandstien refer to the path as a cultural heritage route.
Churches, museum and mining history
The history of the area's buildings can be traced at several locations. Øre Church was built in 1865 and is classified as a listed church. Gjemnes Church dates from 1893. Osmarka Chapel was built in 1910, consecrated for church use in 1912 and extensively restored inside in 2008. Skeid is also home to a museum complex belonging to Gjemnes municipality.
Another historic site is Raudberggruva. Entry to the mine tunnel is prohibited because it is unsafe. The walls of the former miners' house still stand nearby; an information board tells the story of the mining operation. A hike from Raudberggruva continues to Blånebba, which is 764 metres high and offers views down towards Batnfjord. This lets you combine the area's mining history with a hiking destination without entering the closed mine tunnel.
