Lesund: Rocky shores, hikes and history
Accommodation in Lesund
Lesund combines days by the water with hikes and opportunities to discover the region’s history. At Skjærgårdsparken Lesund, holiday homes are located by the water in Lesundet, Aure. The complex is situated between the Trondheimsleia and the skerries of Aure. This means there are different experiences to choose from during your trip: rocky shores and boat moorings, short walks and hikes in the municipality’s mountain areas.
Rocky shores, fishing and activities on the water
The rocky shores right in front of the holiday homes at Skjærgårdsparken are ideal for swimming and sunbathing. The homes also have moorings with direct access to the Trondheimsleia, making fishing trips and water sports possible. This waterside location is especially appealing when choosing accommodation if you would like to spend time on the shore or on the water.
Depending on the weather, you can fish for cod, pollock, haddock, saithe, crabs and lobster in the Lesund area. Sheltered bays are recommended when the weather is rougher. Lesund-klakken is considered a popular spot for catching small saithe for dinner. These different fishing opportunities give a stay by the water its own character, whether you would rather spend your time fishing or enjoying water sports.
From short walks to mountain hikes
There are short walks in the immediate surroundings of Lesund, while longer mountain hikes lead into the larger mountain areas of the municipality of Aure. Skjærgårdsparken Lesund lies between the Trondheimsleia and the skerries of Aure and offers good mountain terrain for hiking in summer and winter. You can therefore choose between shorter trails near Lesund and longer hikes in the surrounding area for active days.
One specific hiking destination is Storbrannfjellet: the ascent begins a five-minute drive from Skjærgårdsparken Lesund. From there, you can enjoy views across the entire Trondheimsleia and of the Tustna mountains. In the nearby area, you can also go kayaking, hike mountains such as the 908 m-high Inderbergssalen, or pick berries in the forest. Cross-country skiing is also an option during the Easter period. These activities suit different seasons and interests; the mountain hikes offer a different way to experience Lesund and Aure than a day by the shore.
Rich wildlife and traces of history
Lesundet has a rich flora, with a wide variety of meadow flowers. In the municipality of Aure, Mellandsvågen Nature Reserve and the adjoining wildlife sanctuary are protected under Norwegian nature conservation law. For a stay focused on the landscape and nature, these areas offer a different emphasis from the activities along the Trondheimsleia.
Melland Fort is nearby. A constructed path leads to the fort, where there are picnic tables and a barbecue area, and traces of the war have also been preserved. The Melland stronghold was established in the winter of 1943/44 on the Finset farm on the outer side of Skardsøya by the German occupying forces. It belonged to the Trondheim-West artillery group and had two artillery batteries with a total of eight guns. A visit therefore combines time outdoors with a specific chapter in the region’s history.
Åkvika in Lesundet also tells of the place’s former importance. It was a centre of business and social life in outer Nordmøre, and for this reason was called “London.” The name refers to Åkvika as a local hub and complements the military history at Melland with another aspect of Lesund’s history.
Choose the right location for your trip
If your main priorities are swimming, sunbathing or taking a boat out onto the Trondheimsleia, the waterside location of the holiday homes at Skjærgårdsparken is a key advantage. For longer mountain hikes, you can also take trips into Aure’s larger mountain areas; short walks are available right by Lesund. Melland Fort offers another idea for a day combining nature and history. When choosing a holiday home, you can weigh up whether a waterfront location or excursions into the surrounding landscapes better suit your travel plans.
If you are planning hikes beyond Lesund, you can also consider the Fjordruta. This DNT Signature Route passes through Aure, then Heim, and ends in Surnadal. The route has 13 cabins in total, several of them in Aure. For launching boats, Lesund Småbåtlag provides this service for a small fee to its members who live in or have a holiday home in Lesund and the surrounding area.
