Aure combines a historic churchyard with a protected historic town centre, a walk along the Aureelva and a range of activities. The town’s history dates back to the Middle Ages; at the same time, when planning your holiday, you can choose to focus on culture, exercise or the facilities at the Aure Arena.

A Churchyard with a Long History

Aure kyrkje is a wooden cruciform church, consecrated on 24 October 1924. However, the site has been used as a churchyard since the 10th century. Before the present-day church stood the medieval stave church, Sankta Maria kyrkja. Several periods of history therefore meet in one place, though the history of the site should not be confused with the construction date of the present-day church.

A single item of church furnishings also points to an earlier era: Aure kyrkje has an altarpiece dated to 1460. Those interested in church art and architectural history will find plenty to explore here, from the wooden church’s design to the long history of the church site.

Town Centre, Town Hall and Kofoedsamlinga

The protected historic area of Aure sentrum includes the church, the vicarage with its storehouse and boathouse, the old town hall, the mill house and the area down to the river. The town hall was relocated to a plot near the old vicarage; after being preserved in line with heritage conservation guidelines, it was converted into a café and art gallery. The café and gallery are run by Aure Kunstlag.

Blårommet is a museum space in the old vicarage in Aure. It houses Kofoedsamlinga, a collection of midwifery items and equipment belonging to midwife Astrid Kofoed. The collection focuses on a particular profession and its tools, adding a personal, everyday-life perspective to the history of the town centre.

Walking Along the Aureelva

The Aureelva loop is an easy walk along the riverbank and the Aureelva in the centre of Aure. It’s a chance to stretch your legs if you don’t want to spend your entire stay exploring historic buildings and collections. Free parking for the loop is available at Aure kyrkje. The riverside walk and historic sites offer different ideas for things to do in Aure; you can decide which ones shape your stay according to your interests.

Swimming, Climbing and Bouldering

The Aure Arena adds sporting activities to your cultural and local discoveries. Its swimming pool measures approximately 8.5 by 12.5 metres, and the water temperature is about 27 to 28°C. The pool can be hired throughout the year, except for six to seven weeks in summer.

The Aure Arena sports hall also has Salmarveggen, a climbing and bouldering wall. The pool and climbing wall offer different ways to build exercise into your stay. If you’re planning around several interests, you can decide whether historic discoveries and walks or sporting activities should take up more of your itinerary.

Choose What to Focus on During Your Stay

When looking for a holiday apartment in Aure, you can start by thinking about what interests you: church and local history, Kofoedsamlinga, the Aureelva loop or the facilities at the Aure Arena. The options listed above give you a range of specific ideas to explore.
