Tynset offers plenty of ways to spend your stay exploring cultural history and enjoying the outdoors. In town, the museum and buildings tell different stories of the past; at Nebybrua, a network of trails on both sides of the Glåma takes centre stage. There are also distinctive landmarks such as Sparken. Which of these aspects interests you most may shape your choice of a holiday apartment in Tynset.

Getting to town and finding your way around

Tynset station is on the Røros Line. From there, trains run towards Hamar, Oslo S, Røros and Trondheim S. This makes Tynset a destination with rail connections in several directions. The Ramsmoen Museum Centre is in the town centre, immediately southwest of the cultural centre and the station. Its location gives you a clear reference point for the cultural part of your visit.

Ramsmoen is an old farm where Nikolai Ramm Østgaard grew up. The site thus combines a preserved farm setting with a biographical link to Tynset. If you are interested in local history, the museum centre is a good starting point before you explore other sides of the town.

Farm history, church and distinctive landmarks

Tynset Open-Air Museum features original farmhouses and reconstructions dating from 1600 to 1930. The visit focuses on historic buildings: originals and reconstructions offer different insights into the history of farm architecture. Its broad time span makes the museum a different kind of cultural destination from a single building in the townscape.

Tynset Church is an octagonal wooden church dating from 1795, with seating for 700. Its shape, building material and year of construction are distinctive features for anyone interested in Norwegian church and architectural history. A very different and unusual landmark stands on Torvet in front of the town hall: Sparken is about six times larger than an ordinary kick sled in every dimension. AktivitetSparken is also by the town hall, at Torvgata 1.

Tynset Cultural Centre opened on 12 March 1988. It houses a library, a cultural café, a cinema, a health centre and a medical centre. These different facilities reflect the building’s varied uses. As you explore the town, you can discover several cultural themes side by side: historic farms and churches, as well as a cultural centre with a range of functions.

Trails and history at Nebybrua

If you prefer to spend time outdoors, the Nebybrua hiking and recreation area has a network of 13 routes and trails. It runs along both sides of the Glåma River, with a footbridge at Neby connecting the two banks. A total of 13 routes and trails meet at Neby, including Gamle Allmannvei and Pilegrimsleden. Their names show how different paths converge here, without requiring you to commit to just one route.

The area is also part of Tynset’s history: at Neby, information boards tell the story of the town in the 17th and 18th centuries. When planning your day, you can focus on the trails or also explore the town’s earlier history. The boards complement the cultural and historical impressions from the museum and town centre with another perspective on Tynset.

If the train is important for your journey, you can also take the connections from the station into account. You can also discover Kvikne as another destination.
