Tynset offers many different ways to explore: historic churches and a cultural trail sit alongside pilgrimage routes, hiking destinations and the tranquil Glåma Valley. If you are travelling with varied interests, you can shape your stay around whether cultural history, outdoor activities or both are your priority.

Cultural history in Tynset and Kvikne

Information boards along the cultural trail in Neby tell the story of Tynset in the 18th and 19th centuries. For a deeper insight, visit Museumssenteret Ramsmoen, which includes exhibition spaces, archives, collection storage and a library with workstations available to the public. The open-air Tynset bygdemuseum is in the centre of Tynset. These different options let you choose from cultural experiences ranging from a walk with historical information to a look at collections and exhibitions.

The churches also differ in their architecture and history. Tynset Church is a wooden church built in 1795, with an octagonal floor plan. Tylldal Church in Tynset municipality was consecrated in 1736. Its octagonal roof turret hints that this unassuming-looking church is more richly decorated than many others. Kvikne has a wooden cruciform church dating from 1652–1654, which was remodelled in 1739 and features furnishings and an interior from the 18th century.

In Kvikne, the history of the Vollan gård farm dates back to the beginning of the mining era in the early 17th century; later additions include a private farm chapel. The Kvikne Copper Works reveal another part of local history: the mining area preserves ruins, several house foundations, walls from a wheelhouse and remains of water-powered installations, including traces of flumes and dams from the 18th century. The mining area is 8–9 km from the centre and can only be reached by road in summer—a practical detail to bear in mind when planning your visit.

Pilgrimage routes, hikes and scenery

The Østerdalsleden runs from Trysil or Rena via Tynset to Trondheim. A total of 13 roads and trails meet in Neby, including Gamle Allmannvei and the Pilgrim Path. They run along both sides of the Glåma and are connected by the pedestrian bridge in Neby. Pilgrims can collect stamps for the pilgrimage route at Tylldal Church and Tynset Church, both in Tynset municipality. This information can help you combine a stay with an interest in pilgrimage and churches without making the entire route your destination.

In Forollhogna National Park, you can hike through mountain and summer-farm valleys; the national park extends into Tynset municipality in the north. For more walks, Tynset Turlag publishes numerous suggestions for independent hikes in the surrounding area and also organises group outings. In Ripan Nature Reserve, numerous information boards make it easier to explore traces of the Ice Age. Riptjønna, a mountain lake, is also located there and can be reached by a well-marked 2.5 km trail from the Nedre Glomsjø car park. The stated distance gives you a practical reference for planning your day, without assuming a particular walking time.

The Glåma Valley between Telneset and Auma offers a different perspective on the landscape. Here, the river flows calmly, dropping from 490 to 465 metres above sea level over 20 kilometres. At the old Eidsfossen power station, a path leads from the car park to the site; the power station has been restored and opened to visitors stopping there. Tynset municipality has also put up information boards. If you enjoy discovering different topics along the way, you can find both information about the landscape and insights into a power station here.
