More than 4,000 fish-rich lakes, three salmon-bearing rivers and extensive natural areas define Porsanger. There are also marked trails, birdwatching areas and traces of a long history of settlement. Lakes, protected areas and winter trails
The waterways are a defining feature of the landscape: Porsanger has more than 4,000 fish-rich lakes and three rivers where salmon are found. In winter, 648 kilometres of snowmobile trails are also available for fishing or recreation. This is a distinct focus for winter travel; the trails should not be confused with a network of ski slopes.
Stabbursdalen National Park lies mostly within Porsanger Municipality. Only a small part of its northwestern corner belongs to Kvalsund Municipality. The national park’s aims include preserving the world’s northernmost pine forest, various water systems, the Gáissene mountain formation, geological deposits and cultural heritage sites. For easy outdoor activities, there are hiking trails as well as open cabins and gammer huts.
Other landscapes also each have their own distinct character. Roddenes Nature Reserve preserves beach terraces that reveal how the sea retreated after the last Ice Age. Trollholmsund consists of naturally formed dolomite figures. On Reinøya, a nature reserve protects a representative area of Porsanger dolomite with unique vegetation and wildlife; plants found there include Dwarf Clubrush, Smoothing Braya and Mountain Eyebright.
Nature trails and opportunities for wildlife watching
The routes vary considerably in length and terrain. The marked Stabbursnes Nature Trail runs from the car park to the tip of Point Stabbursnes and is 2.8 kilometres each way. Red-marked wooden posts numbered 1 to 56 mark the route. Another short option is the marked trail to Rørkulpen: it is less than 1 kilometre long and has a fire pit and seating. A marked trail from the car park leads to Stabbursfossen waterfall and is about 5.5 kilometres long. The trail to Stuorra Biŋalvárri is about 7.5 kilometres long and leads to one of the prominent peaks in Stabbursdalen National Park.
At Roddenes, a 2.7-kilometre geological nature trail combines outdoor exercise with information about the landscape; information boards line the circular route. If you are planning your trip around birdwatching, Stabbursnes Nature Reserve is home to one of Norway’s largest continuous shallow-water areas and one of the country’s most important wetlands for birds. A birdwatching station on the southern side of the Stabbursneset headland overlooks the Valda marsh. It is open from spring to autumn. Valdakmyra is considered the only place in Europe where the lesser white-fronted goose can be easily observed during its spring migration.
Rock art and Kven culture
Settlement traces in Goarahat and Sandvikhalvøya date back more than 10,000 years. The area is also home to a rock painting site dating from 2,000 to 4,000 years ago, as well as valuable, species-rich natural pastureland. The Porsanger Museum in Lakselv is showing an exhibition about rock art in Indre Sandvik from 2 June to 30 September 2026. Photographs and processed material present both the motifs and the methods used to reveal faint and almost invisible figures.
Kven culture is also reflected in local activities and events. The Porsanger Kven Language Centre offers bookable workshops on Kven language and culture for kindergartens and schools. One of the topics is “Kvääniruokkaa – Kven food”, about Kven cuisine. The annual Kven festival Kipparifestivalen takes place in Børselv. Also held annually, “Til topps i Porsanger” features eleven excursion destinations in Porsanger Municipality, including summit hikes and nature trails.
The smaller localities include Smørfjord, Lakselv, Russenes, Skoganvarre, Børselv, Lakselv and Indre Billefjord.
