In Loppa, challenging mountain hikes meet short Perletur routes, a protected bird cliff and the history of an old fishing village. There are also sandy beaches and opportunities for activities on the water. To help decide where to stay, it’s worth first considering what mix you’re looking for: should the focus be on hiking, nature, the sea or culture?
Hiking trails for different ability levels
In summer, the Øksfjord-nærturområde has five Perletur hikes, as well as another Perletur hike to Moloen. Rektinden on Loppa øy is also among them: the hike reaches an elevation of 280 metres above sea level. If you’re looking for hikes that suit different ability levels, Loppa has Perletur routes ranging from easy green trails to very challenging black trails. Blue and red routes are rated from low to moderate difficulty. This lets you choose a trail to match the level of challenge you want, rather than planning for all hikes as if they were the same kind of outing.
Kollaren is used for summit hikes. The hike to Breitinden on the southern side of Rivgojávri/Jomfrudalsvatnet is very challenging, however. This distinction matters when choosing a hike: one summit hike is not necessarily comparable to another, and the high level of difficulty should be taken into account when deciding whether to hike Breitinden. The Perletur hikes are organised jointly by Loppa Municipality, the Finnmark Friluftsråd and several local sports and village associations.
Øksfjordbotn is also a summer destination for outdoor activities: the area is used for hiking and cycling, and also serves as a starting point for longer mountain hikes. Gammelvegen in Øksfjordbotn offers a shorter route. Built between 1905 and 1910, it is 1.3 kilometres long and has been restored. If you’re interested in historic paths, you can consider this as a separate stop; the longer mountain hikes offer a different kind of outing.
Experience nature and observe protection rules
Loppa Nature Reserve protects an important bird cliff and the associated plant communities, birdlife and other animal species. The protection therefore extends beyond the cliff itself to the communities of plants and animals that live there. Motorised traffic on land is prohibited within the area. Camping, pitching tents and setting up camouflage structures are also prohibited. If you’re planning to visit the nature reserve, these restrictions are important to bear in mind.
The Bergsfjordvatnet and Svartfjelljøkelen area is used for ski touring with randonnée skis and for guided tours. So, alongside the hikes mentioned above, ski touring offers another reason to visit. The activity you want to focus on can help determine when to visit and the kind of daily schedule you’re looking for, without implying anything about snow conditions or specific tour conditions.
Beaches, the sea and village history
The beach area at Sandland is used for swimming, paddling and camping. Visitors also come to the Sandland, Bergs- and Langfjorden sea area for whale safaris and recreational and tourist fishing. These activities offer different experiences: the beach area is centred on waterside activities, while those mentioned in the sea area take place on the water and involve fishing.
Loppa øy is a historic fishing village; visitors also make use of the island’s sandy beaches. If you’re interested in local history, you can include this character of the island in your travel plans alongside nature and hiking. Loppa also hosts the Alperocken music festival every July. So July is a key time to consider for a music-focused trip; the festival adds a cultural experience to the nature-based activities.
