Snarøya: Beaches, Coastal Path and Architecture
Accommodation in Snarøya
Snarøya offers several ways to enjoy a stay on the coast: small sandy beaches, an open limestone landscape and a remarkable architectural history. Fürst, in the southeast of Snarøya, is a small sandy beach. Rolfstangen has two sandy beaches separated by a rocky ridge. When looking for a holiday apartment, consider which of these different aspects of the area you want to shape your stay.
Beaches and Coastal Landscape
Fürst and Rolfstangen offer different kinds of beaches: a small beach here, two sandy beaches with a rocky ridge between them there. Fürst is accessible via a coastal path to Strømstangveien; there is no parking at the beach. If Fürst is part of your plans, this access route is a practical consideration when choosing your accommodation and getting around the area.
Rolfstangen is more than just a beach destination. It has several areas of open, shallow-soil limestone landscape with particularly important natural features. This gives the area another facet beyond its sandy beaches: the underlying rock and the shape of the landscape also draw the eye. The marine areas along the coast of Fornebu, Snarøya and Lysaker also include extensive soft-bottom habitats. So, as well as beaches, the coastal and marine landscape is among the features that define Snarøya.
Architecture and Local History
Snarøya Church was completed in 1968 and built of concrete and glass. It was designed by Harald Hille and Odd Østby, who received the Betongtavlen architecture award in 1985. Its construction date, materials and award make the church a striking example of the area's architectural history. If you are interested in buildings and design, it offers a different way to experience Snarøya than its beaches and nature.
Other historical traces reflect different aspects of local history. German occupying forces built several bunkers and defensive positions on Fornebu and Snarøya; some are still preserved. Snarøen Høvleri sawmill remained in operation until 1907. The Ivo Caprino film studio at Snarøen Gamle Hovedgård was built in two stages, in 1952 and 1962. The Ivo Caprino Film Centre is located on Snarøya. Along with the coast, these sites and buildings offer cultural and historical points of interest during your stay.
Swimming and Curling
Other options include Hundsund Baths, with a 25 × 12.5 m swimming pool. Snarøya Curling Hall has been Norway's national curling facility since 1978. It hosts group events for six or more people, booked in advance. So, in addition to nature and architecture, swimming and curling are different interests to consider when planning your trip. Groups planning to curl must book in advance.
