Aagtekerke between pastureland and Walcheren
Aagtekerke lies between pastureland and arable fields. The De Manteling nature reserve is located near Aagtekerke, as is the sea dike of Westkapelle.
Alpacas, llamas and a trip to the beach
A special highlight is the range of activities offered by Alpacas Zeelandia in Aagtekerke. All year round, it offers a one- to two-hour alpaca beach walk for people aged 10 and over. The walk leads through the dunes and along the beach between Domburg and Westkapelle. It thus combines an encounter with alpacas with a landscape of dunes and beach.
For planning your day, the two animal activities differ in terms of age range and duration: the beach walk is for people aged 10 and over and lasts one to two hours, while the experience trail is suitable for all age groups and lasts approximately 60 to 90 minutes.
On the experience trail at the Alpaca Rescue Centrum, visitors can walk along the pastures between alpacas and llamas at their own pace. The experience trail is suitable for all age groups, lasts approximately 60 to 90 minutes, and features interactive information boards and videos about alpacas and llamas. The duration of approximately 60 to 90 minutes can be adapted to the visitors’ own pace.
Alpaca high tea with Zeeuwse bolussen
All year round, Alpacas Zeelandia in Aagtekerke also offers an alpaca high tea for people aged 10 and over. It includes unlimited coffee and tea as well as savoury and sweet dishes, including authentic Zeeuwse bolussen. This regional speciality also gives the experience a culinary dimension. The high tea adds a culinary element with a regional connection to the animal activities.
The Dorpskerk and Aagtekerke’s history
The Dorpskerk in Aagtekerke is a historic church on the Dorpsplein. Its tower dates from the 15th century, while the single-nave church building dates from 1625. Its furnishings include a tomb monument for Hendik Thibaut, Isabelle Porrenaer and their daughter Jacoba, created by the sculptor Rombout Verhulst. The tower and church building date from different construction periods: the tower belongs to the 15th century, while the single-nave church building dates from 1625.
The history of the building also dates back to the time of the Eighty Years’ War. During the guerrilla fighting between the Sea Beggars and the Spanish on Walcheren, the Dorpskerk was badly damaged between 1572 and 1574. Remains of a motte, or motte-and-bailey castle, have also been preserved at the St.-Jan-ten-Heere site in Aagtekerke.
Cycling through Walcheren
Aagtekerke is considered a starting point for a cycling tour through Walcheren. Walcheren and the stretch of beach between Domburg and Westkapelle provide different geographical points of reference.
