Market Square, Church and Historic Buildings

A statue honouring Willem Beukelszoon stands on the market square in Biervliet. He is considered Biervliet’s most famous resident and the inventor of gutting and salting herring. The Biervlietraam in the Nederlands Hervormde Kerk also commemorates Willem Beukelsz. The church itself is Biervliet’s oldest building and was completed in 1659/60. Three restored stained-glass windows were designed and created by the Middelburg glass painter Cornelis van Barlaer.

De Oude Raedthuys is another historic building: it was built as a town hall in 1806. The former Biervliet fortress was a pentagonal earthwork with a bastion at each corner. An interactive model of the built-up town area at a scale of 1:300 is displayed in the Trefpunt. It shows the medieval town fortifications, the 17th-century fort and the homes of tradespeople around 1940. This makes it possible to view different periods of the town’s history side by side.

Poortbos, Windmill and Sites of Remembrance

Another historical focus is the Scheldeslag Museum Biervliet, whose permanent exhibition covers the history of Zeeuws-Vlaanderen during the Second World War. A bronze plaque at the Korenbeurs lists the names of 42 victims of the hostilities in 1940 and 1944.

Guided Tours and Geuzenfeest

In July and August, the summer months, the Stichting Behoud Monumenten Biervliet organises historic town tours every Tuesday afternoon. They begin at 2:00 p.m. at the Trefpunt and last approximately one and a half hours. This fixed appointment can provide structure for the day’s planning, while the model at the Trefpunt offers additional insights into the town’s former appearance. For families with different interests, this creates a blend of exploring together, local history and time outdoors.

The Geuzenfeest is also part of Biervliet’s annual calendar. It is celebrated annually as a tradition; every five years, a lustrum celebration with historical scenes takes place.
