Holiday apartment in Westenschouwen: dunes, forest and family experiences

Westenschouwen is a coastal destination for varied holiday days filled with nature, activity and history. The Duinen Westenschouwen form a high primary dune ridge between the start of the Oosterscheldekering and the Meeuwenduinen. This is where different landscapes and excursion interests come together.

Discover forest, dunes and nature

Boswachterij Westerschouwen is the largest forest in Zeeland and is located on the coast of Schouwen-Duiveland. It is largely freely accessible on foot, by bicycle and on horseback. In spring, bee orchids and marsh orchids bloom around the water of the Boompjesput.

The Familiepad Westerschouwen walking trail is 8 kilometres long in total and can be shortened to 3 kilometres. It runs along a concrete path with a gravel surface and is generally accessible to wheelchairs, prams and walking frames. The two possible lengths make it easier to choose a walk that suits your plans for the day. The Boswachterspad Bos trail starts at the Excursieschuur Westenschouwen in Westenschouwen. From the lookout tower on the Boswachterspad Bos, you can see across the forest, the Meeuwenduinen and the sea. Horse riders can also use the 12-kilometre Ruiterroute Westerschouwen, which has two beach crossings.

Cyclists also have a destination of their own: the Mountainbikeparcours Westenschouwen runs over dunes and through the forest. The Natuurinformatiepunt & trampolinecentrum “Westerschouwen” rents out e-bikes, mountain bikes, kick scooters and family bicycles. Klimbos Westenschouwen is located 100 metres from the North Sea beach. Klimbos Zeeuwse Helden has six courses with around 90 obstacles and twelve zip lines.

Beaches and protected coastal nature

Rotonde family and sports beach is located at the foot of the Oosterscheldekering and has been awarded a Blue Flag. Speelduin is also a family and sports beach at the foot of the Oosterscheldekering and borders Boswachterij Westerschouwen on the landward side. De Punt is another family and sports beach at the foot of the Oosterscheldekering. The water at De Punt beach has a strong current because of the nearby Oosterscheldekering.

Domeinen 1 is one of four adjacent beaches at the tip of Westenschouwen. The sea at Domeinen 1 is part of the protected Voordelta nature area, which is home to many birds, fish and seals.

Traces of Westenschouwen’s history

The past is also part of the character of the place. From the year 1400 onwards, the new harbour was called Westenschouwen. Westenschouwen is associated with the local legend “De Vrouwe van Westenschouwen”. The archaeological remains of the former harbour district of Westenschouwen include house foundations, wells or barrel wells, as well as a paved section of road.
