Kerkwerve is one of the ring villages of Schouwen-Duiveland and combines village history with experiences in nature and special excursion destinations. The village centre is arranged in a ring around the church.

Church and history in the village centre

The Nederlands Hervormde kerk at Weelweg 1 is a Rijksmonument. Inside, there is a pulpit dated 1700. The history of the religious building goes back even further: the first church in Kerkwerve was founded around 1200.

At the Ring, or along Weelweg, there is a statue of community nurse Cornelia van Zijp-Bijlo on her motorcycle. West of Kerkwerve there is also a man-made Vliedberg. The former “Schouwen” steam pumping station is also located west of the village and is considered the oldest scoop-wheel pumping station in Zeeland. The regional architectural history also includes the “De Zwaan” grain mill in Moriaanshoofd near Kerkwerve, which was built in 1886. These various landmarks make Kerkwerve interesting if, during your stay, you want to discover not only the landscape but also local history and specific sites.

Nature by the water and expansive views

Flaauwersinlaag is located next to the “de Heerenkeet” restaurant at Boogerdweg 1 in Kerkwerve. Another nature area is the Prunjepolder, which has creeks and marshlands directly on the Oosterschelde and attracts many birds. A footpath leads to the Zuidkaap observation tower, which offers expansive views across the Prunjepolder.

Excursions for different interests

During special events, children and adults can ride the miniature steam railway at Recreatieboerderij Langeraad. The same Recreatieboerderij is also home to a model-building museum with several model railways. At every Open Monumentendag in Kerkwerve, horses are shod in the Travaljes managed by the foundation. These activities focus on different interests, allowing you to choose between an event, model-scale technology and an insight into a traditional craft.

Kerkwerve as a starting point for planning your holiday

When choosing a holiday apartment in Kerkwerve, you can first consider which of these facets should shape your stay. Those interested in architectural history can plan around the Nederlands Hervormde kerk, the pulpit and the former “Schouwen” steam pumping station. For nature-focused days, the themes of the Prunjepolder, Oosterschelde and Zuidkaap are ideal. If you are travelling with children, you can take the special events and the model-building museum at Recreatieboerderij Langeraad into account.

Cycle to Kerkwerve

The “Monumentaal fietsen Midden-Schouwen” route leads to Kerkwerve via the dikes. If you enjoy combining history, landscape and physical activity in your holiday planning, you can include this route as another thematic way to explore Kerkwerve.
