Culture and History

The Historisch Museum De Bevelanden is housed in a former monastery that later served as an orphanage for a long time. The museum displays regional traditional costumes from De Bevelanden dating from the past 150 years. The Grote of Maria Magdalenakerk in Goes also reaches far back into history: the late-Gothic cruciform basilica probably originated from a tuff-stone hall church dating from the second half of the 12th century. From the beginning of April to the end of October, the church is open to individual visitors; it also provides visitor information and offers guided tours of the church.

The Grote Markt, a historic car-free square, is part of the city’s historic setting. A market has been held there since 1350. From May through October, a free guided walking tour through historic Goes takes place every Wednesday afternoon. Another distinctive building is Slot Oostende, considered the oldest building in Goes. A historical guided tour for a maximum of 15 people is offered there on Saturdays at 10 a.m. The brewery tour at Slot Oostende includes a visit to the fermentation and storage tanks as well as the Brouwzolder, and ends with a tasting of four different beers.

Experiences Between City and Countryside

The Stoomtrein Goes-Borsele offers a train journey like one that might have taken place at the beginning of the 20th century. The Stoomtrein Goes-Borsele museum depot in Goes includes a workshop where volunteers restore and maintain trains. Visitors can watch this work in the traction building. The entrance area of the Stoomtrein Goes-Borsele is about 400 metres from Goes NS railway station.

The Goes–Kloetinge–Kattendijke cultural heritage route is 20 kilometres long. In the centre of Goes, Vlot offers bicycle, tandem, scooter, kick scooter and electric boat rental. Golfers can enjoy the challenging 18-hole championship course at De Goese Golf, designed by Donald Steel. The TrackMan® Range at De Goese Golf is also open to non-members and can be used without prior reservation.

Water and Natural Areas

The municipality of Goes borders Oosterschelde National Park and Veerse Meer. Goese Sas is a popular scuba-diving site on the Oosterschelde. De Hollandsche Hoeve is a recreational park with play meadows and walking paths.

KANOA is located on the Veerse Meer near Haven de Piet in Wolphaartsdijk. KANOA offers canoeing and stand-up paddleboarding and has a climbing tower with a zip line over the water. In summer, a tourist ferry service operates between Kortgene and Wolphaartsdijk.
