Holiday apartment in Kloetinge – Geerteskerk, windmill and trails

Kloetinge is one of the oldest inhabited parts of Zuid-Beveland; a settlement already existed there in the 10th century.

Geerteskerk: construction history and organ

Geerteskerk is dedicated to Gertrudis van Nijvel. Its oldest surviving section is the double choir, consisting of the main choir and the north choir, also known as the Onze Lieve Vrouwekoor. This double choir was built around 1300 in Flemish-Zeeland brick Gothic style. Visitors interested in culture can admire both the medieval brick Gothic architecture and the later organ building at Geerteskerk.

Geerteskerk also houses an organ built in 1787 by Hendrik Hermanus Hess of Gouda. It is one of the few surviving church organs by this organ builder. The tower also has a notable historical classification: it was completed in the second half of the 15th century and is the last church tower built in the Middle Ages on Zuid-Beveland. For a visit, the organ and tower can be considered as two separate historical highlights.

Further historical traces in Kloetinge

Oostmolen is the last surviving windmill of the five windmills that once existed in Kloetinge. De Groe in Kloetinge is a Vliedberg, that is, a motte castle, from the late Middle Ages. The two sites do not represent the same type of structure: Oostmolen is a surviving windmill, while De Groe is a Vliedberg or motte castle.

Het Jachthuis also takes you into a different era. It was built in 1871 as a country estate on behalf of the new Ambachtsheer Johan Cornelis Clotterbooke Patijn, following a design by the architect J.H. Hannink, and was not intended for permanent residence. In 2009, Het Jachthuis was added to the list of Rijksmonumenten. The garden of Het Jachthuis continues to be opened annually for a performance by the Brassband Excelsior. Music is therefore present in Kloetinge both in the historic organ and at this annual performance in the garden.
