Soest: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

In and around Soest, natural areas, military history, museums, and cultural sites come together. The former Soesterberg Air Base is particularly impressive: through its military use, it developed into a unique natural area. In Vliegbasis Soesterberg Park, visitors enter historic buildings on guided walks that tell the story of the Cold War. Guided cycling tours through the park are more than 10 kilometers long. Another route in Munitiepark covers 4.5 kilometers.

Nature

Landgoed de Paltz also combines landscape and movement. The walking route on Landgoed de Paltz is 3.9 kilometers long and leads through Landgoed de Paltz. The estate itself covers almost 100 hectares of untouched nature. These routes therefore represent different scales: a clearly defined walking distance and an expansive estate with nearly 100 hectares of nature. The garden is freely accessible all year round.

Culture and History

The National Military Museum has the largest military collection in the Netherlands. In the museum’s Xplore area, the world of the armed forces is presented in an adventurous way. Museum Soest focuses on a different aspect of history. It is housed in a listed monastery dating from 1868 and displays, among other things, an old classroom, a permanent exhibition on the royal family, a section on the Second World War, a wheelwright’s workshop, and a fire service section. Information about the local flora and fauna is also available.

Since 2019, a concert has been held practically every month at the Oude Kerk Soest under the name “DOK-concerten.” The Openluchttheater Cabrio is a fully equipped open-air theater in the middle of the forest in Soest.

Culinary Experiences

De Windhond, an operating grain mill, is part of Soest’s local character. Several times a week, it mills grain into flour products that are sold in the mill shop. De Windhond also offers approximately one-hour tours of the mill and the milling profession. The “Proef de Streek” cycling route in Soest leads to local products such as freshly milled flour, artisanally produced cheese, local liqueurs, and freshly baked bread. These products can be sampled along the route.

At Stichting De Paardenkamp, visitors are welcome every day between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. at Hof Vosseveld in Soest and at the Het Gagelgat museum farm. There, they can get to know the horses and see how they are cared for. The combination of a farm, museum farm, and daily opening hours adds another specific setting to the historical and cultural sites.

Geographical Context

Paleis Soestdijk, a palace, is located in the immediate vicinity of Soest. Landgoed Stoutenburg, an ancient site, and the Sypesteyn and Paushuize castles are also located nearby. Voordaan and Heihuis are parks in the vicinity of Soest. Galgenberg is a hill in the immediate surroundings. Almeerderstrand is a beach in the wider regional surroundings of Soest.

Soest Station is one of three NS railway stations in the municipality of Soest. The other two are Soest-Zuid Station and Soestdijk Station. Other places at this level are Soestduinen, Soest and Soesterberg.
