Holiday apartment in Utrechtse Heuvelrug: Nature, Trails and Culture

Utrechtse Heuvelrug combines extensive natural areas with historic estates, castles and trails through forests and heathland. The municipality is partly located within Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park. As a result, different landscapes come together: near Doorn, the Kaapse Bossen feature forest trails, historic church paths and impressive avenues of beech trees, while the Leersumse Veld encompasses the Leersumse Plassen. The heathland there is grazed by a herd of Piedmontese cattle. At the third body of water, there is a birdwatching hut as well as opportunities for peaceful walks.

Nature

The Sterkenburg estate also showcases different sides of the landscape. It includes wet woodland, meadows, open water and numerous large, partly listed trees, making it a diverse natural area. The estate's historic garden and park layout has largely been preserved in both structure and detail and was designed in the landscape style.

The Henschotermeer offers a different landscape experience: it is a recreational area in the forests of Utrechtse Heuvelrug. It has a sandy beach and opportunities for swimming. A paved footpath almost 2,500 metres long runs around the lake; marked hiking and cycling routes are located in the surrounding area. The recreational area's facilities also include beach games, play lawns, play hills and a wooden pirate ship as play equipment.

Trails

In the municipality of Utrechtse Heuvelrug, you can hike or cycle through forests and heathland, passing castles and estates along the way. The Klompenpaden lead along unpaved forest paths, through farmland and across estates. Near Doorn, a 5-kilometre hiking route through the Kaapse Bossen passes the Doornse kei, the historic stone table and the De Kaap observation tower.

At Landgoed Zuylestein, the approximately 9.8-kilometre Godard-Bentinckroute conveys the cultural and natural values of the landscape. Also there, an approximately 3.5-kilometre audio trail lasting about 50 minutes provides insights into the history of the estate. The Gerrit Achterbergpad begins at the Wapen van Sandenburg and can be reached via an access path from Huis Doorn.

For a playful activity, De Weistaar offers a 16-hole mini farmers' golf course suitable for children and adults. Bosbad Leersum has a naturally heated outdoor swimming pool filled with spring water. Activities for young and old are organised there during the swimming season.

Culture and History

Several places make the history of the surrounding area visible through specific buildings and sites. The Amerongs Historisch Museum is located in a restored tobacco barn. It explains tobacco cultivation using original tools, historical photographs and interactive presentations. In 2025, the museum shifted its focus from tobacco cultivation to the broader history of Amerongen.

Kasteel Amerongen is associated with the abdication of German Emperor Wilhelm II in 1918. Huis Doorn is a museum in a former imperial residence in exile; the original interior has been preserved. The estate includes a 35-hectare park laid out in the English landscape style. The gardens of Kasteel Amerongen can be visited independently of the castle.

In Doorn, the Maartenskerk is considered the oldest church in the province of Utrecht. A wooden church or chapel already stood at this location around 885; the tower was added around 1250. The Bloemencorso Leersum is another event, held every year on the third weekend of August for decades.

Leisure

In summer, Huis Doorn offers the family treasure hunt “Het geheim van de Keizer”. Doornse Gat is a freely accessible recreational area with lawns, a sand hill, play equipment and picnic areas. In Heemtuin Leersum, also known as “De Londotuin”, a great variety of native plants can be seen on the soil types best suited to them. Guided tours are regularly offered there for members and interested visitors.
