Historical traces in the village

Ter Heijde was once a fishing village where the fish that had been caught was sold on the beach. In 1830, the last fishing boat disappeared from Ter Heijde beach. This former connection with fishing is one of the historical themes that shape the village beyond the beach.

A particularly striking example is the Hervormde Kerk in the village of Ter Heijde. Its façade contains an inset plaque commemorating Maarten Harpertszoon Tromp, who was killed on 10 August 1653 during the First Anglo-Dutch War in the naval battle off the coast of Ter Heijde. The church consists of an eastern section dating from 1720 and a western section from 1952. It is considered the only tangible remnant of Ter Heijde's history.

At the entrance to the village, a monument consisting of two cannons commemorates the 1653 naval battle between the English and Dutch fleets. Together with the church, it provides a tangible historical connection for a walk through Ter Heijde.
