The Zeillogger VL 92 Balder was built in 1912 at the A. de Jong shipyard in Vlaardingen and is the oldest herring logger in the Netherlands still in service. Its authentic atmosphere can be experienced, as can life aboard a real herring logger. The VL 92 Balder can also be rented for a boat trip.

Culture

The maritime past can also be experienced in the permanent exhibition “Behouden Vaart!”. It covers two centuries of technology, innovation and entrepreneurship in Vlaardingen’s fishing industry. Museum Vlaardingen tells the story of a city with a rich history on the water. The exhibition “Brood uit water” complements this by focusing on traditions surrounding Hollandse Nieuwe.

An important historic building is the Grote Kerk. Originally built as a Gothic, three-aisled hall church, it was destroyed in 1574, then restored and expanded three times. In 1865, its interior was completely altered. The present stone Molen Aeolus dates from 1790. At Molen Aeolus, mill guides welcome visitors, offer tours and organise activities in and around the mill.

Further evidence of the local fishing history is concentrated along the water. Koningin Wilhelminahaven, together with the adjacent Grote Visserijplein and Oosthavenkade, is characterised by a strong herring history, maritime heritage and a distinct harbour atmosphere. The Visbank in Vlaardingen was built in 1778 and served as a fish market for private customers until 1949. It can be visited on Westhavenkade. The Stadskraan was built in 1625 on behalf of the municipal administration of Vlaardingen and was mainly used to install and remove the masts of fishing vessels. The tenth Stadskraan was ceremonially unveiled at the beginning of 2022, replacing an earlier reconstruction.

The restored Touwbaan monument has halls through which visitors can walk. The Buitenplaats Van Ruytenburch combines the history of the estate with contemporary art. Vlaardingse Broekpolder is also home to Masamuda, an educational open-air archaeological site. There, reconstructed prehistoric and medieval buildings illustrate the distant past.

Nature

Broekpolder forms a clear contrast to the harbours and buildings. It is a 400-hectare green recreation and nature area surrounded by the waters of the Vlaardingse Vaart and the Vlieten. Several walking trails lead through the area. Cyclists can use the Fietsroute Vlaardingen, a 20-kilometre cycling route that starts at Infopunt Vlaardingen.

Infopunt Vlaardingen provides free city maps as well as cycling and walking routes through Vlaardingen and Broekpolder. This provides information both about the urban area and the paths through the green area, without conflating the different content relating to the city and the polder.
