Zwijndrecht: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Zwijndrecht combines riverbanks, an island park, former waterways and diverse paths with distinctive sites of cultural history. Parks, nature reserves, cycling routes, museums and historic buildings lie between water and greenery. This gives the town many different facets.

Nature and Landscape

Develpark is located on an island in the Devel. It was designed in 1962 as an example of strictly modernist post-war planning. Develbos lies along the former Devel stream; visitors can hike, cycle and ride horses there. De Hoge Devel sports complex is also located in Develpark and offers recreational swimming, lane swimming and swimming lessons.

Around 200 tree species grow in Munnike Park Arboretum. De Hooge Nesse is a 72-hectare area between the Oude Maas and the Lindtsedijk in Zwijndrecht. Waalbos forms an open area along the former course of the Waal. Noordpark lies on the riverbank at the Drierivierenpunt and offers views of Dordrecht.

Near Zwijndrecht lies the 77-hectare tidal nature island of Sophiapolder in the Noord near Hendrik-Ido-Ambacht. In this area, visitors can walk along boardwalks and paths through the tidal landscape of Sophiapolder.

Cycling and Paths

Several routes pass through or start in Zwijndrecht. The 55-kilometre Drechtsteden cycling route starts at the Lindtsedijk in Zwijndrecht. In Zwijndrecht, it passes the De Munnikendevel and Develbos nature reserves. The Zwijndrecht–Barendrecht route runs through Zwijndrecht past Noordpark, the Oude Maas and Veerplein, then continues along the Lindtsedijk and reaches the De Hooge Nesse recreational area.

The Zwijndrecht–Biesbosch route starts at Veerweg 10 in Zwijndrecht. For a shorter, activity-focused route, the Kidsbeweegroute Hooge Nesse is available as a walking route featuring interesting information and exercise activities. The Waalpad is an educational nature cycling path between the village of Heerjansdam and the local swimming pool.

Culture and History

Noordpark was transformed into a sculpture park in 1996. A numbered sculpture route also runs through the Zwijndrecht area, from the Waterbus stop via Veerplein, Maaspad and Noordpark. The TRIS Museum displays 25 historic military vehicles.

The Zwijndrecht water tower was built in 1897 and is 41 metres high. The building is eclectic, constructed of brick and equipped with an iron reservoir with a capacity of 220 m³. Korenmolen Landzicht dates from 1868 and was used for almost a century to mill grain.

KunZt is an exhibition space in the former town hall of the municipality of Zwijndrecht for exhibitions, workshops, inspiration and meeting others. The Zwijndrecht Historical Association uses De Vergulde Swaen to manage its collection, set up exhibitions and organise lectures.

Exploring the Waterways

The Zwijndrecht Veerplein Waterbus stop is located on an attractive section of riverbank. It is served by line 22; bicycles can be taken on board free of charge. In the area around Zwijndrecht, visitors can also travel from the mainland to Sophiapolder and back on a free passenger ferry operated by volunteer skippers. Around Zwijndrecht, Sophiapolder can be reached by bus line 88 to the Laan van Walburg stop and then on foot in just over ten minutes.

Places in Develpark

De Kiboe-hoeve park farm is located in Develpark next to the swimming pool and the Devel waterway. Visitors can see, touch and learn about various animal species there. For small children, the park farm has a playground with various play structures.
