The Kagerplassen are a centuries-old peat meadow area in the heart of the Randstad. In the town centres of Sassenheim, Warmond and Voorhout, paths lead to parks, mills, waterways and historic sites.
Nature and Trails
The Kagerplassen are suitable for sailing, trips in a sloop, canoeing and stand-up paddleboarding; cruises and day trips are also offered. The Zijlpont provides a connection for pedestrians and cyclists. It carries pedestrians and cyclists between the Kagerzoom on the northern edge of the Leidse Merenwijk and the Zijldijk along the centuries-old Boterhuispolder.
Teylingen can also be explored on foot along various routes. Rondje Teylingen comprises nine walking routes: three each in the town centres of Sassenheim, Voorhout and Warmond. From the Dorpskerk, self-guided walks start that lead to religious heritage, along the former Rusthoff estate, across the Heerweg, to special trees in Rusthoff Park and on a family walk; each individual walk takes about an hour.
Koudenhoorn includes a quiet area for nature lovers and has a two-kilometre outer walking trail. The Molen Hoop Doet Leven is also an atmospheric stopping point for walks and bike rides, including along the Rondje Teylingen. This mill is a prominent landmark in the landscape around Voorhout. Voorhout lies in the heart of the Duin- & Bollenstreek, a short distance from the beach, dunes and sea, while also offering a rural, green setting with peace and spaciousness.
Culture and History
The centre of Warmond is designated as a Rijks beschermd dorpsgezicht, meaning a nationally protected village landscape. In Warmond, a historical discovery tour leads to noteworthy historic sites in the village centre. There, visitors can also learn more about the life and work of the painter Jan Steen. The Oude Toren is the oldest building in Warmond; the former church was first mentioned in a book shortly before 1049.
Historic sites include Huys te Warmont, which was founded around 1303 as a medieval fortified manor. The Bos van Krantz surrounding Huys te Warmont was laid out in the English landscape style in the early 19th century, with oak avenues, centuries-old yew trees and atmospheric bodies of water. Warmelda organises exhibitions and lectures in the listed Pastorie De Roekenhof.
The Ruïne van Teylingen consists of the remains of a 13th-century moated castle connected with medieval history. The round curtain wall and wide moat have been preserved; they show the layout of the medieval castle. During the season, the Ruïne van Teylingen opens its gates to the public. Visitors can walk there, enjoy the view and experience the history of the site.
Further historic traces can be found in and around Sassenheim. The Dorpskerk is the oldest building in Sassenheim; a church already stood on this site in the 12th century. The Sint Pancratiuskerk in Sassenheim is a neo-Gothic cruciform church designed by Jos Tonnaer from Delft and built in two phases between 1912 and 1929. Huis ter Leede is a 17th-century country house that was rebuilt in the eclectic style after a fire in 1861, using the old cellars and old masonry.
Rusthoff Park was laid out between 1830 and 1850 by landscape architect J. D. Zocher Jr. in the landscape style. The park in Sassenheim offers a circular path and a pond and was created from an estate dating from the late 18th century. The Molen Hoop Doet Leven is also a Rijksmonument dating from 1783 in the Elsgeesterpolder.
Events and Regional Impressions
The Bloemencorso is among the events in Teylingen listed as intangible cultural heritage. The Natte Kaagweek takes place in July. It combines sailing competitions in various classes with festivities on land. The Turfrace starts in Warmond and adds to the series of events connected with water, local history and regional tradition.
A cycling tour passes several cheese farms and provides opportunities for local shopping. Thus, alongside the town centres, parks and historic buildings, the Kagerplassen, the polder landscape and the paths through the surrounding countryside are also central to the various impressions.
