Flower Fields, Views and Routes

Sassenheim is surrounded by wide open views that form a colourful display of tulips, daffodils and hyacinths in spring. Cycling routes run along extensive flower fields through the natural landscape and the village, as well as to historic heritage sites. These routes connect open countryside, the village and historic destinations in a clear sequence. In the surrounding area, the Landgoedwandelen Sassenheim walking route passes the remains of the medieval ring castle of Teylingen and Het Oude Koningshuys. A viewpoint in Sassenheim offers panoramic views over the Kagerplassen. The open field landscape, the routes through the village and the established panoramic view over the Kagerplassen each add a distinct accent to exploring Sassenheim.

Walks and the Course of the Year

On the last Sundays in June, July and August, silence and inspiration walks are held in Sassenheim along the local “pearls”. The walks give the summer months a fixed place in the annual cycle of the village. The annual Bloemencorso Bollenstreek flower parade also includes Sassenheim. In the parish community, the Pancratiusfeest is celebrated at the end of September or the beginning of October with a festive Eucharistic service and a special activity.

History in the Village Landscape

The Dorpskerk was built on a dune. A wooden chapel that probably stood there earlier was replaced in the 12th century by a Romanesque single-nave church made of tuff stone. The church and tower were rebuilt in 1594; bricks were used that probably came from the destroyed Teylingen Castle. The restoration work carried out in 1972 brought the Dorpskerk closest to the original small Romanesque tuff-stone church.

Park Rusthoff is a 200-year-old historic park in the centre of Sassenheim and is designated as a municipal monument. The Molen van Speelman was built in 1846 and was once one of the largest mills in the Dutch coastal region. The construction history of the Dorpskerk, the park and the historic mill each add their own distinct focus to the village landscape.

The Gebr. Bergman bulb shed at Teijlingerlaan 69 is a national monument of the Netherlands. As part of the programme for Open Monuments Day 2026, it can be visited on a limited basis on Saturday, 12 September 2026, accompanied by and with explanations from the architects.

Churches, Festivals and Getting There

The Mariakapel at Sint-Pancratiuskerk is open from Tuesday to Saturday, from 10:00 to 16:00. The cemetery next to Sint-Pancratiuskerk is open daily.

Getting There and Parking

There is free parking at Sassenheim railway station for arrivals. There are additional car parks in and near the centre, as well as opportunities for on-street parking. The railway station, village centre and street space therefore provide clearly distinguishable arrival options when planning a visit to Sassenheim.
