Woubrugge between water, polders and nature

Woubrugge combines water, polder history and nature. The village developed on both sides of the Woudwetering and borders the Braassemermeer. Several marinas are also part of the landscape, as is the Dorpskerk, which stands on the Woudwetering. The Woudwetering is therefore both part of the village’s history and the location of the Dorpskerk. The marinas add another connection to the water to this village landscape.

Waterways and shores along the Wijde Aa

The Wijde Aa connects Leiden with the Braassemermeer. There is a landscaped bathing beach along the Wijde Aa. The beach complements the ferry connections with an opportunity to spend time by the water. Those who would like to explore the surrounding area on foot or by bicycle can also include the Paddegat ferry in their plans: it carries pedestrians and cyclists between Roelofarendsveen and Woubrugge. Four ferries may be encountered along the Vier Pontjesroute. This makes it possible to include time by the water, the connection between two places and a route with several ferry crossings as separate highlights when planning the day. The Paddegat ferry is suitable for travelling between Roelofarendsveen and Woubrugge, while the Vier Pontjesroute incorporates several crossings into the route. The route’s four ferries can also divide a journey into several sections.

Historical walk and polder

The five-kilometre walking route “Woubrugge Historisch Actief” starts at Gerbrand Swartlaan in Woubrugge and provides a clear framework for planning a day around a historical walk. The route’s length makes it easy to assess the time required. The Oudendijkse Polder was established in 1626, and in 1761 it was decided to drain it. Those interested in culture can view the historical route and the polder history as different highlights of a day.

De Hemmen and the polder landscape

De Hemmen features unique swamp forests and many bird species. The six islands of De Hemmen were formed after a dike breach in 1788; two of these islands are suitable for recreation. The Vierambachtspolder Route offers a different landscape experience, leading through meadows and fields. The opportunity to relax on two islands adds a distinct feature within De Hemmen.

Regional produce in Woubrugge

Asparagus is considered a local product from Woubrugge. The village’s farm shops sell potatoes, onions and seasonal vegetables. Fresh produce of the season in question can also be purchased at the starting point of the Vierambachtspolder Route. This makes it possible to combine an outing through meadows and fields with regional shopping. The selection at the route’s starting point depends on the season in question; the timing of the purchase is therefore part of planning the day. For shopping away from the route’s starting point, Woubrugge has farm shops selling potatoes, onions and seasonal vegetables.
